Hmmm, extra 7kw? High performance model? I don't think so. LSD would be good thing though. I'm guessing it will add weight though, so there goes at least some of that extra 7kw.

I wonder how long the waiting list will be once it goes on sale.

If the Polo blew out to 18 months you'd think that kind of wait wouldn't be unheard of. Or maybe the'll juat make heaps more and import more this time...

    interestingly this local article says,

Drive - New Small Cars due in 2013

"A successor to Volkswagen’s successful Golf GTI hot hatch is not expected to go on sale in 2013."

I saw a quote recently from VWA CEO that they might run out of Mk6 GTI's as early as Feb/March 2013, with the Mk7 not being available until late 2013, or most likely, early 2014. I also read somewhere that in Oz, the GTI makes up for 25% of all Golf sales. The same figure abroad is only 5%. Maybe that's why, historically, the GTI has had back order problems - they simply weren't expecting the volumes. Let's hope VWA have cottoned on to this and will pre-order a comparative amount of GTI's and R's for the Mk7.

I find it hard to choose a new car, there are so many nice sporty european cars about these days in the $50-70k range. Renault Megane RS265, Mercedes AMG 250, BMW 125i Sport, Audi S3, Golf R, Golf GTI, Mercedes C250 and the list goes on. But I have a sneaking suspicion that I will end up back where I started, at the VW dealership. The overall package and value for money is really hard to turn away from.

This time around I am thinking maybe a GTI or R 3-door manual in white with the performance pack, leather, sunroof, maybe bi-xenons, and I assume this time it will come standard with bluetooth and MDI. My lease on the Adidas runs out in July 2014 so should be good timing for the Mk7.

I reckon that VW wont bother with 3 door golfs this time around.

I know what you mean tobes, have felt the same at times, july 2014 places you well to consider either gti or R golfs. there should also be the alfa guilietta update out by then plus theres also the volvo v40 both hot hatch and R versions.

better placed than me with lease finishing end march 2013 which leaves both golf gti and R off the list for me. also my budget is $50-$60k max as want to not stray far from my current lease.

looking like will be moving on from my gti. who knows one day again in future something might return too

If I upgrade I'm thinking I'll either wait for a 40th Edition GTI or I'll be considering the R or an S3. Of course that's just wishful thinking for now while the Mk6 runs fine.

The Alfa would be out of the equation for me, apart from anything else their resale is garbage, and I turn over cars every 2 - 3 years. I would consider a Volvo but probably an S40 or S60 T5 R design. Not a huge fan of the hatch.

I've been doing some pointless browsing on Carsales.com these holidays and you can get some cracking cars under $60k on the used market. Such as Porsche Cayman S, BMW 135i and 335i, even a 2004ish Maserati 3200GT, and so many others.

    But back on topic... lol

hehe not really off topic .... all stiff competition

yeah never owned an alfa but resale is really very bad. not sure re some of the others mentioned there, all 2nd hand presumably and bit older ?

like you also do turn over cars typically every 3 years with my lease. last car I took longer paid the price for ! heavily ! seems car makers really jack up the service requirements post warranty and what worries me with some of those other cars especially any exotics. that said with cars like that and alfas too, buying 2nd hand once theyve taken their big depreciation hit can at times be good buying ...especially if plan to just turn over pretty soon anyways

I'm pretty sure most novated leasing companies allow you to purchase a used car so long as it's less than (I think) 3 years old. For the sort of used <3yr old prestige cars you can get for <$60k they present pretty good buying. Considering a Porsche Cayman S costs > $120k, being able to get a 3 year old one with fairly low kms for about $60 - 70k is great value.

The personal hurdle for me though is losing the security of the manufacturer warranty once it's older than 3 years. Which is why I always seem to get excited by great value near new cars but then end up buying a slightly less exciting new one...
