I've said this before and as I'm not taking sides but if you include 2nd hand or demonstrator models you'll have a better chance scoring a better deal on an R, but this goes without say as the car has been out for over 2 years. I saw an R manual with 2500kms on it with sunroof MY16 for $42k this week on carsales. Now that's a pretty good deal. Finance was still an option and the car was a demo. I think it was only up for 2 days. You don't have much of a buffer with the CS, maybe 5k give or take, however I feel they aren't selling as well as one would think. There is still 10 listed on carsales in NSW. I think the general public just thinks "wow, for $55k, get an R, you'd be silly to pay that much for a GTi". What I do think is that it really makes it an easy choice if one was to decide on the GTi PP or CS. That's a no brainer then, it's the pick of range for the GTi's, it's just not a typical production model.

$52k is nuts that has to be manual no roof?

I changed my order to a DSG on Saturday and pickup my 40th Wednesday, I managed to get it for $52,200 which I thought was a great deal compared to others.

The R is a great car but they are like pimples, everyone has one. The 40th is limited and is basically an R without the rear differential, they will hold their value more as it will be more difficult to find and especially the colour you want.

White DSG no roof. The manual hadn't been announced when I ordered mine in May. Which was fine as I wanted the DSG. Other options when I ordered where GTI PP DSG carbon steel for 45400 drive away. White R DSG for 58k. I dismissed the R because I already had a Focus RS on order since January, and by all accounts will smash the R for less money (58k with forged wheels and Michi PSC2 tyres).

Came back to the PP and the CS. I was somewhat disappointed with the lack of power in the PP so figured the CS would be the equal (in power, not handling) to my Megane RS. Also the limited edition came into it for the "stand out from the crowd" factor in the CS.

So I bought it. Now after 1500ks, my decision has been vindicated in all respects. So much so that I have cancelled my Focus RS order. Mind you, if I'd seen that R you mentioned for 42k when I was shopping, THAT would have tempted me enormously! Why didn't you grab it? That price blows all my value for money arguments out the window LOL. :rolllaugh:

Brian you should've tried an R with a Burger JB1 turns the R an absolute cracker of a drive, I've had it on my R for four months still get goose bumps and look for chewing gum everytime I go for the keys. Enjoy your drive sure it's good.

Hi, What do others think about the PP option at around $45k ( there are still a few out there) that's almost $10k under the ED40....thoughts.

I have enjoyed reading this thread and can imagine that as stock the CS is a bit of a weapon and really challenges the R. I wonder if that is still the case after a stage 1 or stage 2 tune. The additional power which has been documented as quite significant and is likely to strengthen the case for the R directly in comparison with the CS. Thoughts?

I didn't go for the R because it was a manual and I'm a bit of a DSG fan. Also if I went manual I think I'd go CS for sure just for the pure drivers enjoyment. Yeah when I saw it online it really made me think, that's a nutter of a price. Wonder why it was only up for two days.

As for the GTi PP I have driven that car also and if that had a stage 1 I'd say it would be pretty fast. It would be considered a cheaper option to get to CS. I've been reading up on the Burgers JB1 and I would consider that if I went an R but I'm not 100% on the whole "tricking the ECU" thing.

All I can say is having driven all 3 the CS was the one that put a smile on my face. In terms of looks and aesthetic appeal well I'm torn between the R and the CS and the interior well that's another thing. I still prefer my MK6 then any MK7. I'm a little OCD when it comes to being asymmetrical...lol

$52,200 for DSG is still crazy price. When I see people getting the CS for around this price it really makes it more competitive. In terms of options the only thing that sets it away from the R is heated leather seats, front sensors and a smaller boot. The CS is just heaps better but it's only new atm and is LE so not many about.

Yeah I'm eager to hear more thoughts on this as I hear people saying it should be stock.

My understanding is that the GTI ED40 Clubsport has softer front springs, larger rear sway bar, and more aero to keep it stable at higher speeds. Fair enough.

Why not purchase the GTI PP for 10K cheaper and add a set of VW Driver Gear Springs (genuine VW accessory in USA/ Euro/Japan) for no more than 1K supplied and fitted. The VW Driver Gear genuine springs will add stability at higher speeds on the GTI PP, perhaps more so than the standard springs on the ED40 Clubsport (I had the VW DG springs on my MK6 with DCC, they're great at 80kph + cornering):

Not a fan of chipping up a FWD ... only burn up the front tyres.

Fast forward 3 years and WJ's oracle is stating that prospective purchasers of ED40 Clubsport GTI's will want them for about 1.5K more than the standard GTI PP.

On another note, I think the DSG will well suited to the Golf R motor. Like they are made for each other. I drive a Manual Trans Golf 7 GTI atm.

The Passat R-Line in Silver looks hot too. Much better in real life than in pics. Makes the Golf look tiny.
