Fluid leak. Help.

Hey, not had any problems for a while and never had a fluid leak, until now.

On the timing chain side of the engine just below the bottom pulley I’ve got a small pool of clear fluid just on top of the plastic under tray and a small pool now on the floor. The fluid is clear but not water as it is thicker and seems lubricated.

Attached is a photo. You can just see the dampness on the plastic tray and the pool below. My first thoughts are break fluid but the reservoir is still full. Are there and other clear lubricate fluids on this left side of the engine?

I’ve just googled and yes clear lubricated fluid is from water pump leaking even though it’s not pink. Damn it! Could it be anything else PLEASE????

Bit of a long shot but windscreen washer fluid leaking and picking up oily residue on way down?

Water pump, my mechanic showed me dripping down the side. Not going to be cheap....

Not sure if this will cheer you up but could have been worse. Water pumps relatively cheap and easy to get to. Not sure on yours but on other VW Golf 4 cylinder engines it was often recommended to replace the water pump on spec when doing the timing belt. If it were me I would get the timing belt changed as well.

Way different setup. Buried under the intake manifold, driven off its own belt from the back of the crank.

I’ve been quoted $725 for the water pump and thermostat housing. It’s recommended to do both at the same time. It’s also recommended to get the pipe that goes from the water pump to oil cooler as these break easy when doing the job and any belts that come off I’m putting new ones back but it’s not the timing belt and these gen 3 ea888 are chain driven. My mechanic snap on tool says 2.5 hours for the job. All he has to remove is the washer water bottle to get some more room to move.

This is a common fault on Golf R would suggest taking it to VW and getting it replaced under warranty. If they say the warranty, your reply is under the Australian Consumer Law your warranty period is a reasonable period of time. You will be contacting QLD fair trading office. If they say no contact the QLD fair trading office.
Google the court case between LG v ACCC for more information.

I had mine changed under warranty at 30000km the replacement one is leaking at 15000kms. will request they change it at next service.
