    Excessive Engine Movement....

I have a MK7 Golf 90TSI, when starting the car up or using the start stop, its not a smooth process, its like the engine has excessive front to rear movement but appears fine during normal driving conditions. Would this be the engine mounts? Any ideas or common faults in this area?

    Thanks in advance

Try checking what is commonly referred to as the dogbone mount, which is an engine mount on the subframe and which prevents excessive forward and backwards engine movement. You may have damaged this mount or possibly the rubber mount has ripped/fatigued allowing excessive movement.

Odd that it could be damaged on such a new car, but it may have been damaged somehow (debris on the road??).

This blog has some photos showing what to look for (note that the Mk7 has a black steel subframe and not the alloy subframe as per the Mk6 item pictured. What is a Dogbone Mount? – Blog – AutoInstruct

At 6 years, it is likely that some (or even most) of the bushes (and mounts) in the front have deteriorated to the extent that excessive movement becomes noticeable, especially if you have traveled a lot of miles. What is the km reading on it?

Engine and gearbox mounts really only last about 6 years with moderate mileage before there is noticeable movement.

Have your VW specialist mechanic do a thorough check. If replacements are required, be prepared to spend some money Note that if it is indeed mounts and/or bushes it is a safety issue so the Golf may not pass a RWC if you thought about selling before you have to replace.
