Ok my bad, though it should be obvious to the OP from my original post that you still have some kind of warranty after 3 years manufacturers warranty is over, therefore there should be no need to spend thousands of dollars just in case your new car blows up shortly after 3 years.

After giving it a lot of thought I decided to extend the factory warranty for another 2 years. I know the Australian consumer laws provide us with protection outside of the factory warranty, however while major faults may be more black and white in regards to what is reasonable , our cars now include a lot of tech, and with that, the potential for a lot more problems. Even though some of these problems may be on the small side on the grand scale of things, that doesn't usually mean a cheap fix. I'd hate to have to run to the ACCC every time something goes wrong, and then wait while the issue is determined to be reasonable or not in regards to whether it should fail or not. Meanwhile, how long will I be without a car while it's investigated, bugger that! On the other hand I may have no issues over the next couple of years and it turns out to be a complete waste of money. At least I have some peace of mind for now.

i ended up with the Eric 5yr extended warranty for my alltrack. It was a $500-600 more than the 2 yr factory extended warranty offered by the dealer. Will cover the car for warranty repairs up to the purchase price with a limit of 200k kms. Like you said, i wanted peace of mind for at least 5yrs after the 3yr manuf warranty.

EDIT: It has gone up from $2400 to $3000 now for the 5yr Eric extended warranty insurance. At least for VW cars anyways.
