EPC light suddenly came on

Hi all. I have a Golf GTI and was driving when suddenly the EPC and engine light came on. The car went into limp mode. I managed to get it home and need to sort it out.

I've looked up what it could be and it pointed to about 5 things. Is it typically one thing which can cause it or am I better booking it in to VW for them to analyse and repair?

It could literally be a dozen or more issues. No use trying to guess, you need to scan the cars ECU to read the fault codes which in 99% of cases tell you exactly what part is the issue.

Buy yourself a code reader like Carista or OBD11 and it will pay for itself the 1st time you use it. Otherwise, take it to a VW specialist mechanic to be diagnosed and fixed. Don't take it to the dealership unless you like being raped for your $$.

Thanks for your reply Lucas. I actually called the guy on the link as I have dealt with him in the past.

He asked me to go and see him, plugged the scanner in, it said that #2 could pack wasn't working, changed the coil pack, scanned it again and no more faults, test drove it, checked the logs again to make sure the fault cleared, gave him $150 and drove off. All fixed within an hour of me calling him.

And I will look at buying a scanner. Good to be able to see what's going on if a fault appears. I'll look at the ones you recommend. Thank you
