    Every car I have ever owned had a friction hand/park brake. Some used the normal caliper other had brake shoes inside the rear disc.

    I've never see a car with a dog/latch park brake.

    You can use it as an emergency brake, and a very effective one at that.

    However, it's absolutely not for normal driving use.

    If in the even of hydraulic brake failure (i.e. pedal sinks to the floor), push the button/hold the lever up until the car comes to a complete stop.

    Same thing happened to me about 2 weeks ago. My brother just had to go touching all the shiny buttons

    Doing about 60k/hr and all I remember was some loud warning sounds and something on the dash display. Considering these things are for emergencies to bring your car to a stop, I don't think there will be any damage done to your car.

    The Park position in an automatic / DSG transmission is a dog, and should only be selected with the vehicle stationary.

    The parking brake (also referred to as the handbrake) is a conventional friction brake.

    It used to be referred to as the handbrake, because it was a secondary or emergency brake. This was changed to parking brake when it became a requirement that all vehicles have a split system braking system. It was argued that it was unlikely that both circuits would fail at the same time so there was no reason to have an "emergency brake".

    This is why we have such variations like the foot operated ratchet one in the Honda CRV where once you partially apply it, you have to go all the way to be able to release it. It's only meant to be applied when already stationary.

    Did your car come to a full stop from running at 60 k/hr?

    Hand brake / parking brake is a dog? name the car(s). I can't think of any.

    lem2808: I had the very same experience as Zman just after I got my car. Fidgety passenger flicked on the Ebrake when the car was travelling at city speed. Fortunately he didn't fully engage the Ebrake (just flicked-it). The car didn't come to a stop, but it did not like-it at all. Loud noises from all sorts of places and strange messages from the dash-just as Zman has said. I did an auto-scan on the car after the incident (with VCDS cable). Found no errors, or faults.

    I reckon that the Ebrake button on the center console should have a hood over the switch so that it requires two deliberate actions to engage the park brake. This same kind of thing happens on the normal lever-type hand brake (i.e the two deliberate actions are: press the button on the lever, then lift the lever).

    My wife accidently pulled the lever up when meaning to pull the cup holder slide back - she did it without looking while I was driving at 100. The rear wheels instantly totally locked in a way no conventional handbrake could make it.

    Nope. It was just engaged for a moment. Maybe 1 - 2 seconds. Prob dropped from 60 to 50 by my estimate.

    But I will also be warning all future passengers to stay away from that passenger eject switch.
