Doesn't in the Passat either You have to pull it up to set it. Train wife buy diamonds wave in front of her till she does it automatically.
Then hide diamonds in case she forgets. LOL

The handbrake on our Alltrack comes on (and off) automatically.

The DSG has an auto hold feature, so if you leave auto hold turned on the park brake will automatically engage when ever the car stops. I'd assume a manual has the same feature?

Yep this is true on our tiggy although only when you turn the car off. But I hate the auto hold function so generally don't have it turned on.

Actually, you can be fined and get demerit points for not leaving the transmission in gear when you park a manual. I know my brother did. He just had the parking brake applied. As the brakes cooled down, the pressure came off the brakes and he found the car had rolled down the street and into a power pole. Fortunately no one or car was hit, but the police were called and he was fined and got demerit points for failing to leave the car in gear. You might even fail your driving test because the last thing you are asked to do by the examiner is to park the car and secure it.

Automatic transmissions have a dog clutch that blocks the output shaft from rotating when in Park.

If you have autohold on. Will only come off automatically if you have seatbelt on also.

I rarely use autohold therefore mine does not come on when I stop.

The auto hold function uses the abs pump based on the brake pedal pressure when you come to a stop, not the electronic handbrake.

    .
It's also sensible to turn the wheels into the kerb on a hill. I believe it's a legal requirement on the Streets of San Francisco - Carl Malden will book you.

It doesn't take much of a drive or much heat in the brakes to get the rotors expanded enough so they let go when they cool. I've had it happen on my car in my driveway.

Just been out and tried mine.

With the Auto hold OFF the handbrake does not apply automatically.

With Auto hold ON it does.

It does not release under either unless the driver has their seatbelt fastened
