Question DSG Gears Jerky (4th Gear Upwards)

    Hi Everyone,

I've got a strange problem where I've had the DSG of my Golf 7 be really jerky from 4 gear upwards, particularly when accelerating. Sometimes it upshifts or sometimes it jerks and stays on the same gear.

I've taken the car to a transmission specialist (Gearbox Solutions) in Liverpool in Sydney who diagnosed it as a clutch kit that needs replacing. They did so and the problem is still there. I brought it back and they said some seal was leaking and replaced the clutch again with a new seal. Took it home today and after 10-15 minutes of driving the problem is back. I've sank a lot of money to replace the clutch Kit (around $3k so far) and I want to try to see if there is something else that has been missed.

I'm due to take it back next week and I believe they don't know whats wrong with it.

    Thanks for any help.

    Danny

What model and year of Golf? (will reveal which DSG is it).
    How many kms?
Does it log any trouble codes? If so what are they?
Was basic settings run on the transmission after the clutch replacement?

    Its a 2013 1.4L Golf 7 TSI (highline)

The car's done 123,000 km and had the clutch kit replaced at 50,000km when it experienced the shudder that many have experienced. It was replaced under warranty and never had the same issue since.

My mechanic and the transmission specialist scanned the car with no errors coming up so they've all struggled to find what the problem is.

not sure about the basic settings exactly but the transmission guy did say the car has been returned back to normal and it should "relearn" your driving style and adapt to correct the error when i told him I experienced the same problem when I returned home. I drove it for around 1000km and it never improved.

I also remember that when I had the car returned to me from VW after the shuddering (which was only from take off in 1st gear), the car was back to 100% normal straight away. No need for "relearning".

Its a strange one, hopefully someone can help.

It's the dreaded DQ200 dry clutch DSG.
Doesn't have the greatest reputation for reliability unfortunately.
That said if the clutches were replaced and the correct 'basic settings' procedure was not followed no amount of driving will 'relearn' the correct clutch adaptations.
It needs to be performed using a suitable tool ideally ODIS. This will correctly configure the transmission with appropriate tolerances for the new clutchpack.
If the issues persist after this has been done then you likely have an issue with the mechatronics or maybe even the gearbox mechanicals.

Thanks for the help mate. Appreciate the detailed response.

The car has been going back and forth with the transmission mechanic (gearbox solutions at Liverpool Sydney). They have changed the clutch a further 2 times and issue is still there. They also changed the gearbox mount. The changing of the clutch pack was already $3k

They now think that the transmission control module (TCM they call it) is stuffed and that needs to be changed. Could this have caused the issue to start with? They say it’s a $3k job and expect me to pay for that too, it’s getting rediculous and I don’t think I should be paying more money when the car was misdiagnosed to start with.

Can I get any advice with this?

    Thanks so much 🙏

I’d like to avoid it but if they try to make me drop another 3k to fix a problem that they didn’t fix before, I’ll need to go there…

ring em and find out the details , a threat always makes scumbag operators change their tune.

have you spoken to any VW mechanics rather than a gearbox "specialist"

I’m probably going to do that now, left a sour taste in my mouth how they’ve dealt with it.
