I didn't really like the S3. I went and had a look at them (i was coming out of a 2004 4.2L V8 Audi S4) and i felt that i would rather the top of the VW performance tree rather than the bottom of the Audi performance tree. Also all of the reviews seem to say the Audi is good, but not as good a drive as the Golf R.

There is two systems. The road sign recognition system that requires a camera, and there is the road sign display, which uses the GPS database. I was hoping for the second one. In the UK they can get both systems (I think)

I get where you are coming from, but i REALLY didnt like the 5.8", enough that i didnt want to buy the car with it. I figured it would irk me every day driving it. I have spent upwards of $5-6k for stereo systems in cars before, so i wasn't too worried about the $$$

Is the RVC better resolution? It's crappy on my Gti and I wonder whether the screen is holding the camera back or vice versa

I guess the question to ask is whether cars with discover pro overseas get a better RVC or if it's the same unit regardless

My wifes passat with the RNS510 seems much lower resolution. The Discover Pro 8" is still only 800x480, but with its larger size it seems very clear whats going on behind you. I think the screen on the Discover 5.8" is the limiting factor, not the camera.

I have no clue how car manufacturers think less than 1920x1080 is appropriate for a screen of this size, considering you can buy a tablet with that res for about $150

Hey dtpearson well done on the upgrade, a bit out of my price range but good to see it has been done, now bloody hell Volkswagen give us the option of buying it you dipsticks.

Can I ask how much the VW plug & play Helix subwoofer prices are, where did you order and who will be doing the install.

Also any information you have would be great, did you find out what the price would be from a dealer, every dealer i talk to has no idea what i am talking about, any information would be a great help.

Be careful with the Plug & Play Helix system, i havent got it installed yet, and i may have bought the wrong one. There is two identical looking and identically named models with sightly different model codes. I was working from translated german websites, i got mine from Amazon UK as they are RHD and should be similar spec to Aus cars, but it looks like there is a universal fitment one, Code: 000051419 and maybe a MK7 specific one 5G0051419. They are both called the same thing and i bought the unit because a german website lists the "VW Plug & Play Helix system" as compatible with the MK7 Golf R. But i don't really know which one i have (its not even written on the box or instructions).

I will update everyone when i work it all out. But at this stage i may have blown $800, who knows....

I would give Martin a call at Euro Car Upgrades (Home page Euro Car Upgrades) as they seem to be the experts at retrofitting the Discover Pro units.

Ok i think i have a handle on the different part numbers for the Helix VW Plug & Play stereo upgrade kit (with sub), if you order the 000051419 unit you get a universal fit kit that can be fitted to a range of VW vehicles BUT you need a programming dongle to fine tune the system for the car its going into. If you order the 5G0051419 unit, it is pre-coded for the Golf MK7 5 door.

This website seems to show that the 000051419 unit as suitable for the MK7 Golf R
