Dash light question

Maybe a dumb question, but does anyone else notice the instrument dash lighting is on sometimes and off at others? I have the normal 3 position light switch and even when completely off my dash lights up...sometimes? Am I missing something simple? No DTCs on any module... Car is a 2015 Golf TDI S

When the headlights are off the dash lights up normally but dims or turns off when you go into a dark place to remind you to turn your lights on.

Thanks giveway... Just read that in the owners manual and the logic makes sense... I wonder if this can be changed in vcds?
