Picked up a new Golf last week. Apple car play wasn't working, couldn't connect to my iPhone6. Worked fine for the dealer and my wife's phone. Tried swapping cables, no go.
I read in another forum/thread that Onavo and other vpn apps were an issue, and I had one of these. I deleted the vpn app and the profile, restarted phone. Yay car play now works with a variety of cables.
    so good. so cool.

I wonder why Apple prevented the demo of wireless CarPlay at CES? VW says Apple stopped it from demoing wireless CarPlay at CES | 9to5Mac

Haven't found the CarPlay that useful so far. Having to plug it in is a big negative as I rarely get my phone out of my pocket when in the car and no interest in changing habits. Any hope that existing cars will get wireless via a software update?

What's the most popular feature? Better music interface? Messaging while driving?

    Thanks,
    Rob

Mainly the music interface for me - Apple Music (streaming/phone content) & Spotify (despite its quirks).

Voice control via Siri is great.

    Messages/Calls system takes away distractions.

Maps is good - Since plenty of contacts/locations are saved in Apple Maps already, I prefer to use it over the MBII Navigation (which is a decent, free backup for Apple Maps).

I don't like driving with a phone in my pocket so putting the phone down & taking 1 second to plug it in (for sync & charge) doesn't bother me.

Though wireless CarPlay does look to be on the horizon....which will be interesting.

Found it useful on a trip to Byron Bay. With all the work they're doing on the freeway extensions the Golf map was out of date but Apple maps seemed to have the updates.

It still has its issues - mainly inaccurate estimated travel times being ~10 minutes longer than Google, lack of suggesting faster routes whilst travelling & a weaker representation of traffic.

Despite those flaws, it still works very well & is very driver-friendly in the way you can find all your saved destinations by a name you've assigned to them (which Google surprisingly hasn't implemented yet).

Its smooth-panning 3D view is uncluttered on the 6.5" screen, with the directions on a left panel - one touch of this panel mutes the voice guidance & you can adjust the volume of the voice guidance by tapping the volume buttons on the steering wheel whilst voice guidance is talking (same way as with the VW NAV).
As far as apple map don't have a "avoid toll" for me, big NO to car play. And have to click + and - for zoom in and out....Seriously you think it is better than the stock nav? I actually want to change to android because of it.

Picked up my MY16 R 2 weeks ago. But I don't think carplay or android auto is useful at the moment. Probably need to wait till next version.

Was excited about it in the first few weeks. Haven't use it since.

    CarPlay Impressions

I have to reset my phone or the head unit probably every day, but only for Spotify functionality.

I also wish Spotify would allow you to save songs whilst driving (a great big + sign wouldn't be that dangerous to touch when driving, would it?)

That doesn't sound right, is there app update to fix that issue? have you tried it with another cable? I had alot of trouble with mine and changing the cable fixed it for me.
