The new Polo has grown quite a bit. Boot space is not much different to a Golf now, for instance.
How much bigger will the Golf Mk 8 get to keep some distance between the two?

Based on Chamber of Automotive blah blah, the small hatch and wagon can have a foot print up to 8300 (rounded and derived from length x width in mm)
Given the wagon is 300mm longer, it has a footprint of 8194. The hatch is at 7654.
Assuming the width doesn't change, the difference between wagon and hatch remains 300mm, and VW takes its size to the max, the golf can only grow by another 58mm before it goes into the medium car segment.
The new polo is 4053 x 1751, which gives it a footprint of 7096. The cut off to light car is 7500. Just under 200mm of wiggle room. Maybe they will bring out a Polo wagon like Skoda did with the Fabia?
Maybe VW will decide to push Polo into the small car segment and Golf into the medium car segment in the future. But given how well small cars like Polo are selling overseas, it's not likely I don't think. Could be wrong tho.
