7.5 Golf R Wagon skips gear issue

    Hi All

I own a 7.5 R Wolfsburg wagon which I’ve had from new, which is now 18 months old. For the last 6 months I have had a issue when slowly accelerating from a standing start. When the gearbox tries to go into 2nd gear, it misses or can’t find the gear and the engines revs up and only stops when I take my foot off the accelerator and the gear is then found. This only takes about 1 - 2 sec, and during this time the S or D disappears from the dial in the dash. This also occurred once in reverse. In total this has occurred about 13 times in the last 6 months. I have written down the dates and times these occur and have had the car at VW twice and they can’t find how or why this is occurring. Has anybody come across this or have any suggestions on how to resolve the issue since VW themselves don’t know. Thanks

Give it to a different dealer and tell them you don't want it back until they find and fix the issue. Explain that a dealer has already looked at it and why you are leaving it with them. It happens all the time BTW. Many years ago, more than I want to count I had a customer do this to a service dept I worked in and when I asked how he could be contacted he said he couldn't as he was leaving the country and would be back in 12 months time. We managed to fix it by the time he came back so he was a happy camper.

Ozsko, good story but most owners will want the issue fixed asap not in 12 months.

I would but then I had two years of my time under warranty sucked up by the Mitsu GSR turbo being in the service dealers workshop.

Yeah I’ll try another dealer, unfortunately the next closest is a fair way from me. Surely someone else has had this happen before, in any of the Golf DSG gear boxes

My approach would be it is dangerous and if you can't fix it I would like a loan car. I think that is a reasonable approach and once you have a loan car they can take as long as they like as I am putting K's on their car and not mine. If they insist on you taking the car away to see if it happens again take it back and say it did, this only if they admit they did nothing to the car but of course if it really faults then get it back to them. It sounds like one of those problems where they are going to have put kilometres on it so someone can experience the problem and that may involve them having the car on the road a fair bit. My son who does fault diagnosis for another brand often drives cars for a week or more in situations like this.

Every day a car is in a workshop for warranty work is added to the warranty period or that used to be the law but may have changed now. If it is the case write a diary and make sure the dealer has a record that you can verify and VW knows of it.

Ah, the old "we couldn't replicate the problem" excuse. Go back and tell them to keep looking until they find the problem.

I've experienced this a few times (with various cars), including twice after giving very specific instructions only to later find out that they didn't even take it for a test drive. I've learnt not to take no for an answer.
