    Motul history: Detailed timeline

    Over the years, Motul has built a corporate culture and developed its own values. More than mere components of its brand image, these fundamental values can be seen in the way the Group acts with its clients, suppliers, personnel and partners.

    Here’s a look at some of our rich history.


    1853 – THE PIONNEERS’ ERA

    Creation of Swan & Finch (NY) specialized in high-quality lubricants.




    1932 – SALES BEGAN IN FRANCE

    Supra Penn – French distributor of Swan & Finch products was set up and started blending and trading Swan & Finch product ranges, automotive and industrial specialties




    1953 – LAUNCH OF MOTUL CENTURY

    The truly first multi-grade oil on the European market is launched to celebrate Swan & Finch’s centenary.




    1965 – SUPRA PENN OBTAINS WORLDWIDE OWNERSHIP OF THE MOTUL BRAND

    Swan & Finch ceased trading and Supra Penn bought out the brands and formulations. Inspired by its flagship products’ name, the company changed its corporate name to Motul.




    1966 – MOTUL CENTURY 2100

    By the early 1960’s, motor cars were rapidly commonplace and engine power started to increase in leaps and bounds. Century 2100, the first semi-synthetic lubricant, appeared on the market to meet motorsports needs.




    1971 – LAUNCH OF CENTURY 300V

    The Century 300V is the very first 100% synthetic lubricant ever designed for cars and based on vegetable esters technology.




    1980 – INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION

    Motul understood quickly the necessity to be active in key international countries such as Germany for their renowned mastering of mechanical engineering as well as Japan for their leadership in automotive and motorbike design.




    1995 – CONQUERING NEW MARKETS

    Motul continued its international expansion by opening subsidiaries around the globe and penetrating new markets. Subsequently, over 50 % of the company turnover is made outside France.




    2003 – STEPPING UP PRODUCT INNOVATIONS

    Motul’s R&D laboratories introduced with 300V Motorsport range its Double Ester technology enhanced with high performing friction modifiers. This innovation set the benchmark for high technology lubricants.




    2006 – INCREASING MARKET PRESENCE

    Motul acquired a major stake in Baraldi’s equity, an Italian based specialist in release agents for aluminium die casting, as part of its global MotulTech’s strategy.

    The Group also partnered with a Vietnamese company, Vilube and started to market Motul products blended in Vietnam all over the Asia Pacific region.




    2011 – COMMITMENT AND DEVELOPMENT

    Motul launched its foundation: Motul Corazón that supports actions in favor of underprivileged youth anywhere in the world striving for a better future.

    In the meantime, the Group acquired Lescot a company specialized in car care products since 1939.





    2012 – ESTER CORE TECHNOLOGY

    Motul introduced the ESTER Core Technology, an optimally selected high performance synthetic base oils put together with an innovative package of additives that offers exceptional synergy.

    This innovation led to create the new generation of high performance racing motorcycle and car lubricants with its 300V Motorsport Line and 300V Factory Line.
