A great result Simon, and even though some things weren't what you would hope for on the day, it was one HELL of a last minute effort.
How about you spend TWICE as much time on an entry next year, say 3 weeks??
Thought we'd jump on here and give you guys a heads up on our Golf R entry to Hot Tuner this year.
Firstly - what an event ! And secondly - huge thumbs up to all the competition. A very impressive list of motors turned out with a range of mods and price points.
So following a 'very' late entry acceptance, we decided to source a Golf R and do a bang-for-buck entry.
We spent a total of $6692, although approaching $3 grand of that was for matt black wheels and Toyo R888 tyres, (The wheels were no lighter than the stockers - we just thought it'd be cool cosmetically.)
So Performance mods cost a regular Golf R owner would actually do on their car was the aim - to show them just how close we can get the numbers to significantly larger spends on swap out turbo kits and whatever else.
Sure we have plenty of Viezu cars out there pushing faster times and figures, but again - bang for buck - how fast, independent testing, no messing around - Just a Viezu tune and VARdesign exhaust and the prototype VARdesign intake. And Sway bars front and rear.
The car performed well although not quite as quick as we hoped looking at client's-quarter mile times, but comparatively speaking it did very well indeed for a vRace tune and exhaust. We're very pleased with it to say the least !
The night before on a local Dyno it ran as expected - the Hot Tuner dyno lost a lot of guys a lot of power - and we were no exception; we lost over 20kw atw ! There can be massive differences in dyno's / set up / operators.
As the testers said - it's deceptively quick (it ought to be, pushing mid 4's 0-100!) - a great balance for a road car for the track. It's exactly what we set out to do, and exactly what most of our clients want. More mods, mean more power, and a faster car, north of 200kw is more than do-able on stock turbo with a few more mods. But if you want to only throw a couple of grand at your car you'll be blown away at how good we make it.
We'll be back next year to show something else, but as Motor enthused for our stage one package as "... one hell of a set up"
Massive thanks to Toyo and to Motor Magazine for putting on the event and a big congratulations to the winners and other competitors alike.

A very good effort indeed, for the first timer and with the car that had a short time to get ready for the event.
Performance Tunes from $850Wrecking RS OCTAVIA 2 Link
Great outcome and read guys. I respect the $50k builds, but thats far from reality for many enthusiasts so the sub $10k is great and more relevant to many.

Totally agree for the average punter stage 2 is about the limit.
As soon as you start changing turbos and stripping and rebuilding engines this is getting into another league altogether. It then starts turning it into a track car - which is OK but only something that a small % of people will do.
Yes you may still be able to drive it on the road, however it changes a track going road car and a road going track car.
I did also post this on one of the other Hot Tuner threads but will put it here too. Have done the Hot Tuner with a Bang for Buck comparison added in.
So I ranked all the sub $75k cars on price (including mods) and added the points to the Hot Tuner points total to get a revised ranking including the "Bang for Buck". Points were allocated for this ranking in the same way as for other tests (i.e. 50, 45, 40, 36, 32, 30, 29, 28, 27, 26,...).
Here's the final rankings:
It does bias the results towards the lower proced cars. Some of the Toyota 86's jumped a few spots, however the Viezu still came in a very respectable 8th place. Given top end power was down on the day (not sure how/why) it's a pretty good result given that half the cost of the mods were new wheels/tyres (more for cosmetics than performance).
Walking away from these things there's always the "what-if". I think that the car may have picked up a couple of places if it hadn't misbehaved, but given it's a stage 1 tune only it did pretty damn well.

If you narrow it down to performance increase bang for buck on its own - quarter mile and 0-100 times, that would change your results significantly
That's what we set out to do, and I'm happy with that
That dyno certainly caused a lot of people to lose power. More than us even, so taken into context it doesn't matter so much, looking at the performance gains and comparing them to others who had dropped a $10k++++++++ turbo and associated mods into the cars.
That being said when RTR's dyno puts our cars at around 190kw on the Race tune and CAI, this Hot Tuner's Mainline dyno's number made little sense. Although admittedly the Hot Tuner car was not logged nor tweaked, it still put out 193kw the night before. As soon as we get our hands back on the car it'll be logged fully, and put down the drag way in the traditional sense - rather than the GPS set up. Hot Tuner used GPS, not any lights/traditional set up, so there was no timing on the boards, only what the driver showed me after each run. (And subsequently a number of times since we couldn't believe the 188kw/h trap speed)
Best failsafe way of checking performance is 0-100 and quarter mile though so we're happy with our set up pulling around 13s and mid 4's.

Hey I'll get those results together and repost.
I'm all for bang for buck and that's what 95% of the guys out there are after too. Most people don't have another $50k to spend on top of the $50k for the vehicle (well not the last time I checked anyway).
So the bolt on bits and pieces as you can afford it approach works well for me and reality if you spent another $5-10k on the car over a couple of years that would be about tops.
For a "real world" tuned car I think it did pretty amazingly well. I know time was against you guys in preparing the car but it would have been great too see all your VAR hardware on the car too.
But hey at least you guys got to the start line this year and there's always next year to come back with something bigger and better.

Sounds good - I think you're right, Hot Tuner is also mean to be in price categories - we were told the "up to $75,000" rules were to include the new car price, plus cost of Mods, so certain cars would have been kicked up to play with other suitably priced cars anyway. Maybe that'll happen next year...
