    Expensive repairs (Yes/No)?

    Hey all,

As everyone here knows, owning a european car is not a cheap in Australia.
But can anyone tell me if the following seems like an ok price for a few repairs to my 1990 Audi 200 Turbo (all costs include labour).

    Power Steering Rack Reco $1200
Power Steerling Pump Reco $ 450
    Front Bearings $570
Timing Belt + Water Pump + Drive Belts $900

    Total cost: $3120

Now I'm not sure of the break down between labour and parts but I'm I can get the parts for a lot cheaper than this guys is charging.

Would like to get your thoughts on this. Cheers.

Front wheel bearings seem expensive to me.. unless perhaps is quattro?

Tbelt & waterpump & drive belts at 900 sounds reasonable to me, esp for newer cars.

Power steering is going to be a very expensive job thanks to this bloke! I'd look at getting the new/SH parts yourself perhaps. or atleast looking what's out there.

This is just my opinion, based on my minimal experience!

    I'd forgotten about this thread..

I got the first stage of the work done at an alternative mechanic for considerable cheaper.

    Timing Belt
    Roller Tensioner
    Fuel filter
    dissy cap
    roto buttom
    front wheel bearings
    hub seals
    inner wheel bearing
    outer wheel bearing
    ignition leads
    spark plugs
    water pump
    altilnator belt
    air con belt
    power steering pump seal kit
    Plus the labour for 2400.

Car is in with mechanic again at the moment and is getting second stage of work done:
Brake bomb replaced (parts supplied by me)
    Warm up regulator recon
Instrumemt cluster repair (parts supplier by me)
    Rear springs replaced
    Power steering rack recon
Again I expect it to be around 1800 to 2200

Last stage of the work is to have the
    exhaust replaced
    roof liner redone
    replace all suspension bushes
    replace fuel pump
and then the car will be as close to perfect it can be.

Original quote for all the above was 12,000 grand so i hope to make a saving of 5000. It pays to shop around.

As others have said that wheel bearing price sounds very expensive. Is that parts only or supplied and fitted?

    Cheers,

One Step forward 2 steps backwards...

    Latest on the 200 Turbo:

Car was in with mechanic getting second stage of work done:
Brake bomb replaced - Now working as should.

Warm up regulator recon - Part was not recond but replaced with old part and did not repair the problem with hard starting. Car is still tough to start and there is no holding pressure in the fuel system. I think replacing the accumulator or fuel check valve will do it.
However now a belt which was replaced in stage one is making a horrible noise on start up.

Rear springs replaced - The car is now sitting 2 or 3 inches taller on the right hand side then on the left. It seems like the rear suspension was just swapped around so the problem I have on one side is now on the other.

Power steering rack recon - Ok this is done and I have the wheel alighment done too.

    Total cost $1740.
