    B5 Gearbox Issues?

    Hi all,
My B5 1.8T Quattro Avant has developed a rather unpleasant knocking sound in 1st gear the last couple of days. It sounds almost like my old golf when a cv joint was on the way out in that it knocks progressively quicker the faster you're going. But dip the clutch and it's gone, or change gears and it's gone. I'm bracing myself for a trip to the mechanic for an expensive and time consuming gearbox rebuild, but any info or expertise would be much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Rich

Like Jimmy says get it checked out by a professional.
Dunno if its much consolation but I have a quattro in the yard just come in for wrecking. Gearbox will be lots cheaper than a rebuild,

Thanks for the reply Loon. It's at my mechanic now, so he will probably get in touch today.
    Thanks,
