In a MKI I'd probably go the turbo quattro... But the V6 DSG is a cracker and, I believe, the first car to feature DSG in Australia. Plus, the V6 sounds amazing.

In a modern one I'd take the diesel. Yum.

Wouldn't buy the FWD mk1... It wouldn't be different enough from my MkIV GTI.

The 165KW is the one to go for, easily identified by the twin rear pipes. The FWD only has one and like you say would be very similar to the mk4.

Both can be hotted up with software, the 165 goes to 260+hp and the 180hp goes to about 210hp. This really makes a difference to the way they go.

I have a chipped S3 and had a chipped Leon Cupra in the UK that started out as a 180 model. It was really quite a revelation once chipped.

I have no experience of the V6 but the engine is the same genre as the R32 so most tuning options would be the same. I have chipped an R32 and a handful of 4 motion Boras, the throttle response and removal of flat spots are the major changes. You don't get a heap more power.

It would depend how important the gearbox is to you.

    Cheers

    Gavin

Not a fan of the rims but the rest is just fine

I've always had a thing for the mk1 TT. Even though they're completely incompatible with my lifestyle, I can't afford one and doubt it'd be the kind of car I'd really like to have as a daily, but even so, there is SOMETHING about em. Even if it's really just a mk4 gti or r32 in disguse.

    right-click, save...thanks gareth

to the original post, i'd personally look for a new generation model. the first gen is essentially a golf underneath, not as muscular / sporty as the new shape imo.

have a look on ozaudi.com too
