Taking the centre silencer out would do hardly anything Clay, used to do it loads in the UK. The back box is the width of the car and nothing there would be like having an open pipe.

I could do either myself but know it's not what I am looking for, it would be unbearable. Plus my neighbours wouldn't like me setting off for work at 4am I am sure.

I am not in a rush, so I can get it right.

    Gavin,

Im using a muffler called dynomax VT. Its a straight through muffler with a spring loaded butterfly, opens up according to exhaust backpressure.

This is my honest feedback. For now, my A4 sounds horrible at at throttle lift off because of the downpipe goes from 2 1/4 inch to a hollowed cat, goes back to 2 1/4 inch and then 3inch all the way back to a resonator and lastly the dynomax VT muffler. I think a mid section muffler will fix that and also when i install the psi turbo kit(proper 2.5inch downpipe), which hopefully be completed by next week when all the little thing arrived.

The butterfly inside has a tendency to rattle but it is not that obvious. Once I get that sorted, it should sound a lot better and with the mid section muffler, even more quieter. It does get loud @ WOT.

    Here's a test done with a decibel meter :-

    Here's one in car :-

Haha, well Milltek do a "special pipes" version which looks pretty decent? I'm getting my cat back fitted on Saturday and it's barely into 4 figures. Was going to do the downpipe but I am going BT instead.

if your worried about the neighbors you could consider a varex exhaust on the end
i had one on my skyline, its remote controlled butterfly valve,
they have a cannon and a twin tip model
looks nice but can keep the decibels down

I just got a Milltek non res fitted and it's not much louder than stock (with standard cats/downpipe) so I reckon a resonated one would be OEM like sound wise but with better flow? They are very well made and Dave @ ATPG does awesome deals on them.
