VW jetta timing belt
Hey guys I just got a 2006 jetta turbo petrol version with 90000kms. Ive booked a minor service for friday but was wondering whether I needed to do the timing belt now since it's been 7 years or should I wait until 105000kms. I've heard mixed opinions and most people seem to think its safe to wait until the 105000km service. Any advice will be good! Im happy to spend the money if its essential but if I can wait til the later service that would be better.

It is safe to wait till 105K provided there has not been too much environmental impact like living in an alpine area, excessive dust from unsealed roads. I would inspect the timing cover to see if it is clean and not oily or stained. I changed my own timing belt last month and it was in good condition. At the end of the day changing the timing belt is like insurance, I bet there are millions of cars in Australia that have not had the timing belt/chain changed at the recommended interval including my wifes last and current Toyota Camry. I have done 2 timning belt changes on VWs first time took 12 hours but I changed everything that wears out including the water pump, second time took 5 hours for just the belt so it can get expensive for parts and labour. At the dealer it is going to be close to $1,200 just for the belt.

I ended up booking an appointment with volks home for the 90000km service plus timing belt change. Its costing me 1195 all up so I guess I'm happy to get it out of the way. I'll be driving a lot in the next few months so it's safer to get it over and done with.

Hey OilBurna, what is the engine in you vehicle, what I have said above applies to the 2.0T BWA engine, but the main reason for changing is insurance against failure as the damage from a timing belt failure can be extensive. At 7 years the belt (if your engine has belt) will be wearing and this can be from stop / start fatigue from lots of short trips and or environmental impact. This is why it is stated by VW for the 2.0T engine 7 years or 105,000 kilometres. Again as I said there are a million cars that should have had the belt / chain changed but are still going with no issues.
