Seriously, if you want a GTI with a bigger boot you need to talk your wife into trying the Octavia RS, since that's pretty much what it is give or take the Skoda influences. Roomier than the old Jetta, bigger boot than the current Jetta (just) and a liftback, reputation for better build and reliability than Golf, almost certain to get a better deal than VW, current offer of extended warranty and free on roads on "demo's" that probably aren't demo at all...

Did she see a picture or in the flesh? And which colour/s? Sure I'm biased (I have an Octavia TDI), but if you look on this forum at the rave reviews Octavia RS owners are giving the car it's worth trying for a colour that helps her overcome her initial reaction. FWIW there's a new black RS at my work that I think makes the most of the car.

When comparing the 2,the Euro seems much better built and finished than the Highline, which is the model that I was considering.
That is really highly subjective. We could go on forever with comparing specs and this conversation wouldn't finish. I'm sure if I looked closely enough there would be things the Jetta has that the Euro doesn't, but I'm not going to go that far because I don't care. You shouldn't really care too because you have bought a Euro. I'm not going to spend much more time going through Euro specs because it is pointless. I don't own a Euro nor would I be interested in the near future.

Something productive for you would be, say, to browse longer in Euro forums than Jetta forums.

I am very active in ozhonda as well as tsxclub in the USA,as well as here and vwvortex,as over the years I have talked many freinds and family members into VW s including a new Passat TDI wagon ,a Golf trendline, and a Jetta 2,0 TSI ALL LAST YEAR.

I have owned 4 new VWs ,and contribute here by providing worldwide sales figures,so will be here for as long as I want, just now feel that the Jettas competitors are now nicer cars, including the Euro,Mazda 6,I45,Optima,Mondeo,and even new Camry.

Jetta is now more of a competitor for top of the range Corolla, Ultima,Cruze,Mazda 3,Civic,Elantra,Lancer,new Focus sedan, which may be a good thing for VW,as that is where the volume is locally. And I would probably still choose a Jetta over most of those,as your car certainly looks great...

Nor sure if I would choose a Jetta over a Golf, something I have always done in the past,as IMHO Golf 6 is now a nicer car than Jetta 6,based mainly on interior.

Was the Jetta MK5 really supposed to compete against the Euro, Mazda 6, Camry etc? To me those cars are for the Passat to compete with. The jetta has always been aimed at smaller vehicles like the lancer, mazda 3, corolla. At least here where I live it was priced to compete with the smaller cars. I think the MK6 Jetta competes well with the corolla, mazda 3, lancer etc even with the cost cutting involved. I am new to VW though so the cost cutting didn't really upset me as I found the offerings of the other vehicles in terms of performance, safety, fuel economy and even interior sub par to the current euro Jetta.

Doesn't the golf cost more than the jetta as well? The only reference to golfs here is one golf gti that the dealer is selling for 1.5 times the cost of the jetta so maybe the golf interior is better because you're paying more money?

When the MK5 Jetta was launched in Australia,exactly6 years ago,it was directed at the Accord Euro and Mazda 6,which were both smaller cars in their origional forms, and sold well ,with approximatly 16 000 units sold..I always say VW stole 8000 sales away from Honda, and 8000 away from Mazda.

However,I think Australia really is the only country where they compete,as in the US,Euro is called Acura TSX...and competes with the VW CC,and just about everywhere else, the Euro/Accords and 6 competes with the Passats.

Have had the New Jetta for over three weeks now and the only two "niggles" that I could find with the workmanship are

    - Front Seat Belt height adjusters don't move as effortlessly as you'd expect. Not a big issue per se, as the passenger seat is rarely used and I'm the sole driver.

    - The trim around the gear shift has a bit of play to it.

Apart from those two, I have to admit I am quite pleased with what is my first car (ever!).

Time to add to the list, my car is now 5 months old. Just a small thing but it is really annoying. The clip for the sun glass holder in the roof center console has broken, so now it just hangs open....... small but its these little drop in standard that let this car down badly.

Got myself booked in to the vw driving experience day to see if anyone can teach my to drive a dsg without annoying me and my passengers but secretly I am hoping I can talk my wife into taking a massive financial loss on the Jetta and buying a decent vw product.

I bought my Mk5 Jetta NOV last year... It was a rush decision. From all reports in the US that the Mk6 Jetta is being a made to price the car with the cheaper Japanese cars put me off the Mk6. Basically I did not want to own a VW badged Toyota qulity car.

Also the Biggest decision was no more 125TDI in the Jetta !!!

Just over 4 months on, I'm starting to hear a rattle coming from my sunroof. It sounds like a rod is loose in there. The rattles appears when the roof is fully closed, doesn't matter if the shade is open/half open/closed. But it stops when the roof is open..

Probably gotta bring to dealer (again) to get this looked at.. sigh..
