Well back to the original topic , I have had my 147 for 2 months now, mine now has rattles and squeaks in the doors, been back to vw twice and they can hear it but can't find it. I have had blown tail lights, oil leak and the rattle fix. Don't get me started on the axle tramp and suspension bangs !!

I loved our mk5 Jetta but I let brand loyality cloud my vision and this new Jetta is...... well not very good.

My cousin in Canada had a MkIII Golf that was Mexican build and had nothing but problems with it in the 3 years that she was forced to keep it (lease period). She had to get her mechanic to drive out and clear an error code on the way to trading the thing in....

test drove the 147 over night as a (possible) alternative for my wife to our Gti ( we need a bigger boot) and, no offense to owners / prospective owners but the quality of fit and finish, cheapo center console without a closing lid, glue showing through the misaligned inserts on the door just put me off.In fact it just simply doesn't have the interior quality of it's siblings.
I think if you haven't / don't own another VW this would be a good proposition compared to a lot of other vehicles but......if it was my coin I'd go up the foodchain to a Passat, much much better built.
I also showed her a Skoda but she just screwed her nose up, looked at me like I was stark raving and said "fugly" ( or words to that effect)
Just my opinion of course but I've owned / own 3 VW's over the past decade ( and an Audi, so an overpriced and over rated 4th VW )

Jetta 5 came from Mexico, too. At various stages, VW Australia was sourcing them from South Africa. The South African cars were reportedly of a much lower standard.

My intention was to get the NEW Jetta to replace my 2007 Jetta with,as I loved my baby,but then the Jetta,my 4th ,on 3 continents over the years,was written off,and the NEW Jetta was not yet available.

I deceided not to get another MK5,as it was at the very last of them,so bought a new Accord Euro,and thought maybee I would trade it in this year on a Jetta 6.

However,compared to the Jetta 5,it definatly is a step backward,which has really upset me.
For example not fully carpeted boot,no drink holder cover,no coins compartment,no draws under seats,no chrome on TSI comfortline,and no bottle opener,which was the smallest thing,but such a lovely touch.
I will not be trading the Euro in on the new Jetta,just no point.

Globally though,the Jetta is selling like hot cakes,and in 2011 was VWs top selling model,although it seems to be struggling to get going in Oz...

It may be a step backwards, but it's still $6000 cheaper. If you wanted something closest to the Jetta MK5 then maybe you should consider getting the MK6 Highline instead? A lot of the things you have outlined are really very small. Like a bottle opener... does your Euro have one? My boot is fully carpeted AFAIK, and it does have drink holders.

Why are you comparing the MK5 to an MK6, you should compare an MK6 to your Euro instead. Take the MK6 for what it is. It's less refined but cheaper than an MK5, then compare that with your other options. If you want a more refined MK6, then get the Highline. That about sets things a bit more even with MK5.

I don't think they have cut corners with the Jetta MK6 because it is CHEAPER than the Jetta MK5. I would consider them as cutting corners if it cost the same as the previous model... You get what you pay for, right?

The few things missing from the Jetta Comfortline are missing from the Highline as well...and the boot part not carpeted is the inside of the boot lid,not the actual boot.

When comparing the 2,the Euro seems much better built and finished than the Highline,which is the model that I was considering.

Had my 147 Highline for just over two months now and it hasn't missed a beat; no ratttles, nothing falling off - no problems what-so-ever. I would also have to say that the fit and finish is excellent, no glue stains and great panel alignment inside and out (trust me I look carefully and I hate things that aren't aligned or straight). The DSG still gives me the irrits though and wish it came as a proper manual.

It's true that there has been cost cutting from the Mk V, but you really have to be a pedantic train-spotter to pick the differences. The bits you actually touch or contact regularly inside are all soft touch, so for a Jetta Highline that retails at $1K below the base model Passat, I'm prepared to live with the differences.
