My car doesn't rattle in in manual or auto. I've got the same engine and gearbox.
Hi. I noticed my car makes a rattling noise on gear changes 1 to 2 and sometimes from 2 to 1 in manual mode with the windows down and radio low. Doesn't seem to happen in normal D mode or sport mode.
Car has 1200 km on it and will be going in for it's first courtesy service. Can anyone of you check to see if this noise occurs with your jettas as well? Mine is a 118tsi with the dry clutch 7 speed dsg.

ive got the exact same 118 DSG. and just hit 1300km. Sending it for servicing this thursday. So far no problems... No strange rattling sounds. Have you been doing lots of aggressive driving? There clearly is something wrong with your gearbox.

Well actually I'm breaking it in and not been driving aggressively. I have a friend with the mk5 Jetta and he has the same sounds as mine since day one but performance hasn't been affected for either of us. I'm trying to find out how serious an issue it is as I'm hearing about 50/50 on people saying yes for rattles or no for rattles. Of course sales rep says this noise is "normal".
going in for first oil change friday. Will report back what I learned.
Sales rep emailed me to say that Volkswagen has told the dealership that the noise is normal for dsg tranny due to the operation of the the dual mass fly wheel.

For what it's worth I checked Elsawin and VW actually does acknowledge this scenario in a Technical Product Information (TPI) bulletin from 2009. I can't remember the TPI number but it states that DSG gear changes 1 through 3 can be clearly heard (rattling) with windows down while at lower speeds in Drive and tiptronic mode.
VW also states that the noise is due to the DQ200 using less oil than other transmissions and hence less noise dampening.
The noise is a comfort problem and not a component failure. TPI Also states that this is a separate issue from the dual mass fly wheel causing vibration, noise etc which is listed in aother TPI
