Saw the new Jetta yesterday up at Hornsby and it looked a lot better in the metal than in photos I must say. Sat inside the comfortline diesel and liked the feel of it, dash is nice and modern if a bit subdued in typical VW fashion, rear seat leg room is definitely improved, and the boot has plenty of space. The dash has soft touch plastics, but the door trims and glovebox are hard plastics. I plan on test driving both the diesel and 147kw Highline models today so I'm keen to experience how they both drive.

Well, took the new Jetta for a test drive today on a quick mix of freeway and around town driving up in the Hornsby region of Sydney. First up was the Highline model with the 147kw turbo. Overall impression was positive. The car suffers from turbo lag, but it's not bad, you give the accelerator a decent prod, the car waits for a half a second and then gives you a decent shove in the back and you're off. It's a quiet car and the ride was firm, but not harsh, bumps were soaked up ok and it sits nice and flat on the road and felt very stable. Some of the interior plastics make the car feel a little cheap though, especially when you put the Highline Jetta alongside the base model Passat, despite the Passat costing 1 grand more but being down on performance, the cabin ambience is a step up on the Jetta, as is refinement and the general feeling of quality.

The diesel model is the Jetta model I would be tempted to go for, it performs strongly and just felt a little smoother overall compared to the Highline. The smaller wheels and lack of sport suspension play their part here. Seats on both models were very comfortable. I think once people start test driving these cars against competitors then the Jetta could sell reasonably well. It goes well, steers well and is pretty ell equipped and comfortable to drive, throw in the value for money equation and it's a pretty smart buy IMO if you're not after a Passat sized sedan.

I drove the 118 TSI Comfortline yesterday,also wanted to drive a 147...but they had not arrived in Melbourne yet ???

Was a bit disapointed with a few small things.

1.The boot door is not carpeted anymore.
2.The centre console used to be so well finished,with the cover over the drinks holders,and that lovely bottle opener.
There are now 2 empty holes,in which to put drinks into.
3.tHe change holder is now a blank,I used to find that so useful to put petrol vouchers into.
4.Very plain alloys,and no chrome window surrounds.
5.No tyre preassure monitoring on this spec anymore.
6.Trays under the front seats have disapeared.
Good looking car,expecially from the side and rear,and the fin on the roof adds a sporty touch.
Drove very much like the previous model.

Would I buy another one ???

Not sure.
My initial reaction is it as not as premium as the previous model,I think its a lovely alternative to a Cruze,Mazda 3,etc...but not quite in Accord Euro,Mazda 6 territoty anymore,which might work well for VW,as this is where the volume sales action is these days...compact sedans.It will be interesting to see how it sells locally,as its been a massive hit overseas.

Hi Anthony, I am new to this forum. We drove a 118 Comfortline at Berwick VW last weekend. Still had half the delivery plastic on it! I'm pretty sure they had a silver / grey 147 in the showroom. Not sure if this will be a demo but it was in Melb and might be worth a call!

Newbie here! Really excited about the Jetta. Pretty sure I'll be placing an order for the 147TSI with Sports Pack, an upgrade from a Corolla! Been looking at reviews and pics for the past couple of weeks. VW Aust have officially put the model up on the website with some tech specs.

Based on that tech specs, I can see that there is tyre indicator available on the comfortline and highline.

Front seat trays/drawers are only available on the highline.

Did you get a driveaway price for the 118TSI Comfortline? Apparently the 147TSI will be in the South Yarra showroom in 2 weeks time.

Went for test drive today in the 147 Highline and it was very nice. The look of the car from all angles is so nice and with the added chrome bits makes it even better. Looks very Audi A4 in the flesh. Car was smooth and has enough power.

Is this a fair price for the 147 Highline with Satnav + Metallic paint = $42500 driveway?

Anthony you forgot the sliding armrest
No.2 has been replaced by the cupholders in the rear seat centre armrest.
No.5 Tyre pressure monitor button is in the glovebox

The only benefits I see in this car are only the new design, fuel consumption (bar the 147TSI), CISS, larger boot opening space and rear legroom.
Obviously this is a sales vloume model now and if wanted bang for your back the MY10/MY11 were well specced and priced.
