looking at buying a Jetta 118TSI

    Hi all,

Im looking at a jetta for my wife.

we have the option of a new 118tsi comfortline , Its the twin turbo one, for 28 k. I think its the comfortline, but not sure.
How can i tell if its just the 118tsi or the comfortline?

or the same for $25.5 k with 10,000 klm.

Im a little worried looking at some engine issues and transmission issues with the 7 speed. Have these been fixed or will it be an ongoing issue?

We are also lookign at the i30 hyundai - not as nice to drive by far, but inside is very nice in the new model. about the same price, heated seats , folding mirrors and navigation reverse camera, and the list goes on.

Just a little worried about the jetta, Would you guys buy another one?

    your input would be great.

    Thanks heaps
    Chris

Hey mate! To differentiate the comfortline an the basic trendline one easy way to tell would be the wheel rims. The trendline gets plastic covers while the comfortline gets really alloy metal
Rims. Easiest way to tell in my opinion. On top of that the trendline comes with a couple of extra features the trendline doesnt. But icant remember what.

The 118tsi jetta is a wonderful car to drive, definitely has that solid planted feel on the road giving good road confidence. The steering may feel a bit on the heavy side but still gives goodfeedback. The ride is comfortable with minimum noise from the exterior
Unless u get on rough bitumen roads. The DSG gearbox is really smooth as well, seamless gearshifts. But sometimes you may have some slight rattling noises when accelerating off at a low RPM on higher gears. And lastly, the engine. 1.4l twincharger (turbo+supercharger) engine is really phenomonal. The power you get from the tiny 1.4l is amazing. 0-100km/h in just 8.3 seconds. The power and torque is there whenever needed to overtake etc. and if the power is insufficient, a simple basic tune can squeeze out up to 147kw of power if needed.
If you choose the hyundai, you wont have that option as its absolutely useless to tune a hyundai. No matter what, this is german
Engineering. You get that solid feel
And money well spent with this jetta. And mind you, if you can get a comfortline 118tsi at 28k, thats a good deal.

I was told the Jetta has a slightly different version of the DSG to the Golf (Golf having more problems), I've borrowed a Jetta and it's shifting was ehaps better than my car, so I think they're a safe bet). Great car to drive, and much quicker if you decide the upgrade the ECU software (0-100 in under 7 seconds).

Hi guys. Thanks for your help. The one we test drove was the basic then as it had hub caps. If the brand new one was the basic my11 one do you think that 28 k is a good price?

Yeah I noticed that driving it felt so solid.

What is the 7 speed worth or the clutches to change after the warranty is over?

One other thing guys do you have to run PUL fuel. Can you use e10?

    Thanksso much.

I would definatly get the Jetta over the HYundai,as for the same price,it is far better value for money,as has so much room inside, and the best boot in the business,as well as very classic looks.

If it had hub caps then that is not the Comfortline model. $28k is a good price for an MY11 DSG as it is already well within 2012. I got mine for $29k back in December.

I absolutely love this car, but how reliable it is may be questionable. I have had some squealing on acceleration then some shuddering on 2nd gear after a DSG software update (but which has since disappeared, strangely enough). A lot of the fanboys claim these small "niggles" are normal, but I have owned a few brand new cars in the past to know that they aren't!

You cannot use E10 at all. You must use 98 most times and 95 during emergencies where 98 isn't available. Many of the engine problems have partially been caused by using non-98 fuel.

On the bright side, I have not heard of some of the big problems happening on post 2010 cars. I'm hoping that most of them have been fixed...but still not taking any chances. I will be selling my car before the end of my warranty period. I don't want to be driving a car around knowing that if the engine just stopped working that I'd be up for a $7k-10k bill to have it replaced!!!

Would it be cheaper to buy extended warranty than to buy a new car?

Hi Ziggyboy, thanks for your insight. i feel the same, i guess most of the people on here havent even seen inside or driven a new i30 as its only been out for 2- 3 months. By no way am i saying that the jetta was not the best car we drove at all, i think it is by far the best BUT seeing all these problems they have had, which out of warranty would cost 5k plus to fix. i remember replacing or getting a transmission reconditioned was 2 + k with only a 4 speed an my second car i ever bought ( commodore Vs), I can't imagine what a new 7 speed would be worth,

At least I know that I get an extra 2 year worry free with hyundai. Their 6 speed wouldn't be cheap either i guess though,

With the fuel price on 98 is a little scary as i know when i fill my worked VZ ss commodore, but the diesel price is getting closer the the PUL.

I found a site that works out the rough price on servicing , Was the 3rd or 4th service a 4 hour service for the Jetta? The site said it was roughly a $1000 +$ service. As VW dont offer a fixed price service . whiel you cna get the service for a diesel for $280 for 3 years.

I guess its either a hyundai with all the extras, cheaper running cost, Cheaper insurance ,

Or a german car, drives the best, feels the best. less options and a high running cost.

We are going the i30. I would have loved the Jetta though, if it was a work car that they were paying the running cost i wouldn't think again about buying the Jetta thats for sure. it was such a nice car to drive, ( the one we drove had 10,000 klm on it) so i get thats when the car is at its very best, motor has been run in though.

Thanks again everyone for your help. I hope it doesn't bite us in the As* down the track , lol

Don't get it serviced at VW, do it at a VW specialist. Got mine serviced for about $300 recently. Major service will cost slightly more, but wouldn't be $1000. And even if you went with a dealership I think minor service will be around $400-500, not $1k.
