    ABS Sensor - Electrical error in circuit

    ABS, ESP, Steering Angle lights came on after both front tyres got changed. After scanning with OBDeleven it’s fault code 00285 saying electrical error in circuit. Replaced the sensor but the lights remain. Tested the sensor by jumping it to the other side, and the sensor reads fine on live data. It’s perhaps some issue in the wiring. As per the dealership, they’ve checked the sensor and the wiring, and supposedly it’s the control unit that is faulty, but they have no way of checking it for sure. Part is on order basis and ridiculously expensive. I don’t want to spend $4000 just to find out that was not the problem. I’ve checked the wiring myself, and I’ve tried to compare data with the left side. So the voltage reading to the sensor connector on the left side is 13.7V, and on the right side is 13.2V. As per auto electricians, this is normal. There is continuity from the sensor connector to the ABS control unit connector (J104). Resistance within the wire is the same on both left and right sides. Could it be that the control unit is faulty, but only for one wheel? Full scan below. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    @Muza: Hi.

    Hmm........clearly the new speed sensor is OK if it works on the other side of the car. So, there is something odd happening with the front right-side installation that's problematic. I don't have a wiring diagram for a MY16 Jetta, but I understand that it' has a PQ35 platform - so the same as a Golf mk6.

    Have you checked the toothed ring inside the wheel housing and is the air gap between the speed sensor and the toothed ring free of detritus?

    I'm not sure if the speed sensor has 2 x wire (or 3 x wires). If 2 x wire, with the sensor installed- hook-up a multi-meter to the sensor and rotate the wheel. With the multi-meter set to a low DC voltage range, rotate the wheel - does the meter show a reading?

    Finally, the speed sensor circuit to J104 is very simple and it's repeated 4 x times. Before you throw $4,000 at this problem - grab a wiring diagram and swap the wires for the front right-side wheel sensor for the speed sensor wires to another wheel at the J104 connector. The best way to do this is to de-pin the wires from the connector - but you might need to cut/splice the wires somewhere near the J104 connector instead. Then make a fresh SCAN.

    If the fault follows the swapped wires, the problem is NOT in the module! If you have tested the sensor by de-pinning the wires on the connector and the fault remains on the front, right-side - it's fairly clear that the J104 module is faulty

    @DV52 Makes some good point about the toothed ring, something may of been damaged when the wheels were put back on. in this case I think the ring is built into the wheel bearing, but the idea of swapping the sensor input to the other side is a good one.

    Here is the test procedure with a scope for the sensor and ring Test

    But even just running a long jumper wire across to the other side and turning the wheel by hand while looking at the live data in the scan tool should do the trick.

    Thanks Don, that was very thorough. I have the wiring diagram for the car, although I do not know how to post it up on here.

    I’d asked a workshop to take apart the wheel bearing assembly, and we cleaned the magnetic ring. This was after the fault first appeared, but that didn’t clear it anyway. I don’t think there is anything wrong with the magnetic ring or the sensor itself, because it worked just fine when I used a jumper wire to plug it into the left side harness (no errors on the left side, and live data read accurately).

    I tried the multimeter test last week, so at the sensor, there is voltage fluctuation as the wheel is spun, but if I connect the sensor to the harness, and then do the voltage test at the J104 end while spinning the wheel, there is no reading. For the left side, voltage fluctuates in both settings.

    That was enough to conclude that there was a problem with the wiring, but my electrician was adamant that it was the module when I told him the test results. His argument was that the readings just fluctuated coincidently 🤷*♂️.

    Swapping wires at the J104 connector was going to be my final test, which I attempted earlier today. I wracked my brain trying to figure out how to get the pins out, but the pins just did not seem to budge. I did not want to splice wires before the connector, so I’ll wait a week or two for the special tool to arrive from China and I’ll have another attempt then.

    @Muza: OK - I'm happy to look at the ABS wiring diagram if you want. Post-up the diagram on a third party hosting site (I use imgur - but there are lots of others on the electric internet) - then include a link to the picture here.

    @Don - Here you go. Let me know if I am missing out on any portion, and I will try to upload that.

    @Hillbilly - thanks for the tip. Hoping it works.
