I'm guessing it works fine with your Golf R32, which is also CAN based. I can only guess that your VCDS software is super old.
Tried doing it with the key set to acc?

Yep...works with the R32. VCDS software is latest ex Ross-Tech. V11.11.3. Might try it with key at "ACC" as opposed to "IGN ON"
I have the Micro-CAN cable. Can't understand why it wouldn't work with a MY10.5 Polo (2010 6R TSI). the cable powers up when inserted in the socket (Green light comes on at CAN end).
If I have to buy another cable...then I pass.

Well I be, according to the Ross-tech guide you're correct. I knew the Polo 6R was based on the MK4 Golf but I assumed all the electronics would be up to Mk5+ spec seeing as it has MFD and whatnot.
Luckily I grabbed a Hex+Can one

You can change the steering feel via VCDS as well. I'm currently on Program 21 (SEAT Ibiza) which has a heavier feel at slower speeds.
Default for GTI is 41
If you're after a constant weight to the wheel try program 20 (9N Polo GTI)
If you want a super light city car feel try program 51 (Audi A1)

Is there any way to turn off the Bi-Xenon Permanent Running Lights?

If you want to take the Touchscreen Unit out of the Cradle but can't because the it shuts down the bluetooth. Or if your iPhone is cutting out playback on the MDI when the bluetooth connects, try these.
*You only need to do VCDS coding if you want nothing in the cradle or using a non-VW branded Bury cradle*
ie. If you get another VW-Branded phone specific cradle, you do not need to do any coding. But if you get a cradle from Bury (who make the cradle system), you will need to code it.
To deactivate the touchscreen warning, first make sure your phones BT is off. It'll reject the coding if its connected to something.
Load up VCDS -> Select Control module -> 77 - Telephone
In Telephone go select coding and enter...
0200000000000010
To deactivate A2DP (which stops the iPhone cutting out on MDI) and touchscreen warning enter this code instead.
