Do you have a genuine MDI to lightning port cable?

The supplied cable with MDI is only a charging cable. You need to buy a proper audio enabled cable $80 from VW or about $15 on Ebay

As using it involved opening glovebox and the little drawer the midi is in I gave up and just use bluetooth as was a pain in the provebial

Sadly the USB MDI cable is only for USB storage (and charging happens to work too). As Hillbilly has said, for everything else you need the appropriate MDI cable. I've got a couple of 30 Pin cables for the older iPhones/iPods which I still use.

My MDI is in the armrest which is a little easier should I want to go all hard wired. Since I've got a hard mount in the car for the phone I've also considered getting a lightning MDI cable (and maybe an extension) to get the phone dock wired up...

...but (again same as Hillbilly) I just use bluetooth and it works just fine. I'm a firm believer in hardwiring things and get that *technically* hard wired is better than bluetooth for quality... but then it sounds just fine to me in my car. Maybe if I was somewhere with less road noise with a better sound system I might care more

The genuine one looks like it should:

Alot of the aftermarket ones looks like they are using the 3.5mm socket too... (which is no good for the iPhone 7 ). More hunting might turn up a better one, this was my 5 second search:

The best way for music if you have a RNS510 is stick it either on the HDD (takes ages to do) or stick it all on an SD card and play it off that.
Tidy, no cables needed and the phone will work as a phone over bluetooth.

I dont have data on my phone so never use it for anything other than calls

Yes it is a unit on its own but shows up in the RNS510 screen when being used If you have an RNS510 you normally would have Bluetooth incorporated in the system

U can also play the music on your phone using it
