Check Engine Light on with ignition on

Our vehicle is MY19 Tiguan 162, with Active Info Display.

When the ignition is on, ie Start button pressed but not the foot brake, all the symbols light up, then all go out except for the yellow exhaust/emissions light, shaped like an engine block from side on.

Yes, for once I did read the manual thoroughly. It is no help, because it assumes that the error message occurs when the engine is running. I don't have any lights when the engine is running.

The question is, do people see this light, shaped like an engine block, when the ignition is on but the engine is not running.

I don't have the AID, however if I turn the ignition on but not start the car I'll get all lights and then the Check Engine Light (CEL), EPC warning, seatbelt and park brake all remain lit up.

I think this is "normal". If you ever get a CEL come up when you're driving then that's more of a concern, however I think what you're looking at is standard operation of the car. The ECU probably can't check the engine until it's turned on hence why the light is still lit.

If there was an actual fault this would be logged and you could get your car scanned to check.

Normal Just turned mine on and get that and handbrake light(because its on in the garage)

No errors on any modules as checked them an hour ago

That is very reassuring. My wife saw the light and freaked out, but she had only ever done a normal start before - not ignition only.

I had done ignition only a number of times, but had not registered the error symbol. Makes you realise how difficult the cops' job is - human memory is an imperfect thing...
