Their web site says something about not licensed in Australia yet, so the store won’t allow it to download. Hence when you get the physical device delivered to you, there is a link that comes with it so you can download direct from the vendor.

I got mine just last week and it’s fantastic.
I’ve done video in motion (for the kids), key fob active, heated seat memory, traffic announcements, removed nag screens on startup, and enabled fan speed display on auto. It’s very very user friendly.

    Great buy.

Depends if you are going to have it connected all the time you are friving to take advantage of the guages feature, in which case battery life is important as they can draw current quicker than they charge or just connecting while parked to adjust settings.

If you're just doing settings places like officeworks have pendo tablets for about seventy bucks. While not brilliant they are good enough for being a diagnostic interface.

If you want to have real time monitoring there are better setups than the OBDEleven. I use dash command through an ELM327 OBD connector. If you go down this path be careful which ELM 327 you buy, some are too short/ large to connect to the VW under dash port.

Almost 2 years on from this observation, how does OBD11 rate against VCDS now? I'm wanting to do a few tweaks and can't decide on which is the best way to go for biggest database and simplicity.

brettue: Since I first wrote that quote, I have gotten a HEX-NET dongle/cable from RT - I'm totally hooked. What an utterly magnificent device - it runs like a cut-cat compared to OBD11 and it can be used either in cable mode, or wireless mode (uses WiFi). But it's very expensive and the price is not for the feint-of-heart. Still - I've been a "gadget-man" for many years and I've always valued high-end toys!

That said, there is nothing at all wrong with OBD11 and I still use it heaps! It's best feature is that I can make changes to multiple adaptation channels on the one screen (for a "leuchte-set" -say) -then I can batch implement the lot! Can't do that with VCDS. Sure, OBD11 is slower than the new HEX series devices from RT, but this doesn't really matter if you are not a tech-nerd like me.

Basically - it's a question of how you value the addition additional price for VCDS? Some think the additional cost is worth it, others think it's a waste of money. I happen to be of the former view - but it's perfectly OK if you fall into the latter camp!

I note that you come from the same city as do I. If you want, PM and visit the workshop - you can take both devices through their paces on my test-bench (my virtual mk7). Make any changes that you want - you can't break my test-bench no matter how much you may try!!

Please don't PM to ask questions about coding, or vehicle repairs. The better place to deal with these matters is on-line, in the forum proper. That way you get the benefit of the expertise of the wider forum! Thank you.

hmm..... no I got my modules from around the world -depending on what prices were offered at the time (it's quite old now). Some of my modules were heavily discounted because they have broken fixing tabs that would normally be a problem if they were retro-fitted to another car - but this is not an issue on a test-bench. But I'm always on the look-out for salvageable modules to add to my virtual mk7.

Of course the test-bench has lots of error messages when scanned because nearly all the sensors and exterior switches are absent - but it's still a great learning tool (for me and for the odd interested students that come here occasionally). Biggest issue is Component Protection errors - which can't be removed because of the immobilizer arrangement and the fact that the CAN bus is not on a real car!

spacemannz: thanks for the kind words - but I would build it quite differently if I started again. The test-bench began as just a BCM and an engine module - so very simple beginning. Over time, I kept adding bits as my confidence grew and because I wanted to understand more about how stuff worked on my car. But alas, I just kept adding more wires and more modules without sufficient thought to loom structure and neatness.

As a result, it's a mess of spaghetti - my advice to anyone else is pay more attention to wiring looms a routing cables properly!! That said, it's served it's purpose (IMO)

I've never seen a test rig that hasn't been a mess of spaghetti. Don't be embarrassed
Kudos for building it and all your subsequent contributions to the community here. A big thanks from me as I got my OBDEleven last week and happily tweaking my Tig, confident the advice if coming from a reliable source.

    Ditto.
Every OBDEleven and VAG forum I’ve found seems to have active contributions from Don.
