Can anyone tell me how to enable the "screen goes blank after 10 seconds" setting permanently, under screen in the infotainment menu?

I have to select this EVERY time I start the car, which is very annoying.

I'd like to set this so the screen goes blank after 10 seconds, EXCEPT when the navigation screen is on. Obviously navigation needs to be displaying all the time, if you select that screen, but I want all other screens to go blank, unless I move my hand towards the screen and it displays again (which is another setting under the screen menu, and that stays ticked permanently)

From what I have tested, this is the ONLY tickbox setting that does NOT stay permanently selected, when the car ignition is cycled on/off.

Can anyone tell me what settings I need to enable/change, to make this happen? It would make sense if the "screen off after...." setting had a sub-setting to also tick/untick, for "Navigation screen remains displayed", to achieve the above desired result....

    1. After the changes above have been made, reset the infotainment unit as follows: Press the on/off button on the radio until the unit switches off and keep holding down the button for at least 10 seconds - until the unit switches on again
    2. For TMC to work, "TP" and "RDS" must be activated in the set-up menu for the FM radio (TMC data is transmitted on the RF carrier signal for selected FM stations in each Aussie capital city).
    3. It may take some time for the new facility to be established and for the initial set of traffic reports to be downloaded. In my case, the wait time was over an hour, but others have reported longer times.
    Hey DV52,

Just wondering if with the process you went through with OBD11 it exposed the RDS option? My Polo seems to only have TP but not RDS available?

    Thanks.

jonoz: Hi. I developed the screen shots that I posted earlier for the TMC tweak "artificially" - I haven't actually used OBD11 to do this tweak (I used VCDS instead - my preferred device!)

This said, I have been asked this same question before (for a Golf mk7). I always despair at the appalling lack of attention that VW Dealers give to their pre-delivery inspections. How can a dealer allow a new vehicle to leave the showroom without basic facilities like RDS enabled? Without exception, my suspicion is that ALL dealers consider a pre-delivery inspection to be nothing more than a car wash and a smile from the salesperson as you hand over the final payment and drive away from the showroom - absolutely appalling!!

Anyhow, enough complaining - to your question. If the MIB unit in the Polo is the same as those in the mk7 Golf, the RDS facility is enabled in the code-string for the control module @ address 5F (i.e. what OBD11 calls "information Control Unit 1")

So, once you have navigated to the main page for this control module, select Coding and you should be presented with a long list similar to that shown below. Scroll down the screens (it is 6 x pages down on my tablet) until you see the two Byte/Bit entries that I have boxed in yellow below). Make sure that the settings for these two entries are as shown. Then try the "in-car procedure" again.

Spinifex: Hi. I'm not entirely sure that there is a way to get the blanking facility to remember the last ignition switch-on setting. This very same question was asked when the MIB1 first came-out and as I recall, no-ne could find a solution (happy to be proven wrong). And, even if you manage to solve this problem, I'm almost certain that tweaking the blanking function to only ignore the SATNAV facility will be almost unachievable - again happy to be proven wrong.

Another option might be to search through the "engineering menu" in the MIB unit for a similar facility. For example, I haven't played much in the engineering menu yet, but I know that there is a "sleep" option in there (in the "power" menu) that I assume shuts down the screen if no activity is detected after a predetermined time. As I said, I haven't explored these options yet, so I'm not sure if the sleep function is only available when the ignition is switched-on AND the engine is not running - something that you will need to investigate if you pursue this option.

So, if you aren't aware of how to access the "engineering menu" in the MIB, there are two ways of doing this with OBD11: first you can pay credits and use the App (not my preferred option), or you can follow the instructions in the video below. I suggest that you do the latter!!

    Good Luck

Hey mate, Ill have to go through these again as I went to the binary? method and mine was set to 08 and changed it to 09 to match the settings in the other thread. The RDS option is now displayed but still no traffic and on the Traffic screen I get the same TMC with the slash through it that others are getting. I wonder if its worth asking the dealer if there is a software update available or something?

^^^ jonoz: Worth a try - but in my experience Dealers are always unhelpful when you want them to do something that is not part of the standard factory setup. But if there is a software update -then this should be provided gratis regardless of your problem with TMC.

PS: Did you reset the MIB unit after you made the changes?

Is there a particular reset method to use or just powering off and on?

Jonoz: to reset the MIB, you need to press the on/off knob and keep pressing until the MIB turns-off AND turn-on again (it's at least 10 seconds). After you do this you will likely lose the TP and RDS settings (and possibly other settings that you have personalised) - so you will need to re-instate them from the FM setup facility

Ok just did that, will wait and see. Oddly enough the settings persisted.

Got my OBD11 dongle a week or two ago and connected to it ok haven't been able to perform a full scan.
It looks like it gets through a module or two but then appears to freeze up. I've tried it on my Samsung phone and nexus table and the same result.

How long should the full scan take for a MK7 Golf ?

I want to make sure i'm giving it enough time before i chase up if it is a faulty dongle or app.
