I just spotted a red Monte Carlo at the new Rockdale dealership. Red with black roof and alloys.

To the untrained eye it certainly looked far more upmarket than a Mazda 2 or Jazz.

It's also the same story with all car classes - the high-end competitors are always priced just above the starting models from the higher class and they come with comparatively little equipment. The reason the Golf 77TSI is on currently sale is because there's too little power/equipment and everyone buys the better Golfs (90/Bluemotion/118/103/GTI/GTD/R) so they have a lot of stock. The most common Golf I see is the 118TSI with the sports package - they're everywhere around my area! VAG Newbie get your parents out of a Fabia and into a Golf/Octavia 90TSI (DSGs are $26,990 driveaway at the moment) which come with far more equipment and with 13 extra kW and 200cc more they're bound to be a much better car! I'll be waiting for the Fabia RS however at its predicted $26k (+orc) price .

And hey, Skoda Aus predict selling more Yetis so perhaps they don't care that much about the Fabia, but it's nice to know that they'll sell more of them than Citroen are with C3s (I've only ever seen one on the road)!
I don't think the discount is due to 77TSI being a dud. Because 90TSI Trendline is also offering free ORC. So for $27450, you can driveaway a Golf 90TSI with far better equipment. Now you can't say 90TSI is sluggish or underequipt. (with Bluetooth, alloy wheel, 7 SRS, cruise control, leather steering wheel, hand brake and transmission, that's very well equipt!)

Personally I think the reason for the discount is either:
    1. VW has been too optimistic and got too many in stock.
    2. VW wants to climb up the sales ladder so by the end of 2011 they want to be top 5.

Either way, it's probably a good time to buy a Golf. I'll also look at the Octavia as well and see if I can kill the price <$25000 for the 90TSi with DSG driveaway.

All Golf Models are on sale (except Edition 35, R and GTD) at the moment - All on road costs paid for - you just pay the RRP.

The RRP of the 1.2T Golf is $21990. People have been negotiating RRP only prices on Golf GTIs for YEARS and the dealers were hardly overstocked with GTIs were they?

For the price - 21990 - I have heard people saying - Why buy a Polo 1.2T when you can get the much bigger Golf for not much more and NOW!

It's ok RSwag, I'm well used to it by now.

In response, I'd like to ask do you know what a Skoda Yeti is? It's a compact SUV not a small hatch and tbh that's a pretty crap comparison. A better equipped Yeti is $7k (not only $3-4k like the Golf) more expensive than the 77TSI, so I think a 77TSI will do for a few people. Also, the majority of Yetis are going to be 103TDI 4x4 models and not the 77TSI so in reality, who gives a s**t? If I bought a 103TDI and saw a 77TSI I'd assume they couldn't afford a 103TDI and as such, have an inferior car. Doesn't bother me.

I know they've got to work on things such as pricing and equipment but the reality is the Fabia and Yeti are (almost) on sale and that in itself represents an achievement for Skoda Australia IMO. They've doubled the range they offer here and hopefully sales double too. I'm glad I'm so optimistic!

Jake, don't make it personal, you may come out looking silly. I'm stunned you can't see the parallel i was drawing in my comment but i will spell it out for you seeming though you are struggling to comprehend.

If the 1.2tsi is considered a lame duck in the VW Golf rang due to lagging, sluggish performance then how is the same motor going to go in a vehicle weighing more?? The 77tsi was to be the entry level crowd drawer, but even you think it is going to be a small volume niche item. Lets say you are bang on right about the sales coming from the fact most people buying the 4x4 TDI, this to me suggests you agree the Yeti will not see them find ground, how many 4x4 SUV's with a boot that size and at that price do you think they will sell??

And for your final comment, doubling the range from 2 models to 4, is this really an achievement? It's taken nearly 4 years to do this, i can't imagine what other choices they would have had, i mean how long can you go in a market like this with no entry level models?

I'm also glad your dillusionally optimistic, the world and Skoda Australia needs more of it. Me, i'm a realist and i can assure you that the sales will not double annually, the pricing of both models will ensure they will be stagnant from launch.

You can buy a CVT ASX ASPIRE, metallic paint, full leather, panoramic sunroof, Sat Nav with hard drive, rear camera, climate control, bluetooth, reverse sensors, 17" alloys, and keyless entry and push button start.

All this for $36k on road.

Skoda Yeti 1.2TSi FWD DSG on road base model no options in white $35k approx

That still don't make it a good deal at all. I went for a test drive with my parents on the Golf 77TSI, they totally fallen in love with it. It is by no means sluggish at all! Looks like they will settle with the Golf and say sayonara to Fabia.

Seriously, is VW Aus trying to kill Skoda here? They keep on dropping the prices on VWs to match Skoda, and now they are offering free ORC on all Golfs (except GTD and R)! Yet they price the Fabia and Yeti optimistically high and only offer 6% finance deal they call "special"? I can see a lot of potential Fabia buyers will go to Golf now! I'm certainly one of them.

    .
Not sure where you're are coming from... how is the Golf a competitor to the Fabia?
What about your whinging about the stereo, equipment level etc in the fabia? As far as I can tell the Golf 1.2 has the same radio as the Fabia, no cruise control, no blueethooth, not leather trim on steering wheel etc....
