Small boot lid has lost its counterbalance. No longer lifts open on the button and drops like a stone from open position. Do they have springs or gas struts on the small lid? Any tips on how to access for repair?

Separate issue. How exactly does one remove the nearside dash end plate to investigate and hopefully rectify the commonly reported squeaking from within that area?
