VAG scanner - need advice !!

Hi guys,

It's time to complete the DSG service for my 6 speed transmission (Golf GT Sport 2.0 TDI 200. I've got all the necessary parts from ECS, except something to scan the oil temperature. I'm a little scared to just put in as much oil as I take out, as it may not be the right amount in there at the moment. I have 3 questions.

- Should I get a VCDS cable, and if, which one?
- Where can I get a VCDS cable from for the cheapest price? (Anywhere in Aus, America, etc)
- Are there any alternatives that will do the job (eg, VAG Xtool)? I'm planning to use the tool in the future if say I want to upgrade the radio, scan for faults and clear them, etc,etc.

Any other advice to tackle the notorious DSG service would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance !!

You don't need the scan tool.

You do however, need a VAS 6262 DSG filler, or a very good copy.

There's nothing notorious about it.

Engine off, remove the drain plug with a 14mm hex, then remove the inspection tube with an 8mm hex.

Remove the flexible section of the intake pipe after the MAF, and using a short shifter or stubby 24mm spanner, undo the filter lid, remove and replace filter.

Refit inspection tube, screw in VAS 6262 adaptor and filler hose, screw onto bottle, and rest it on the E Box/battery cover/etc.

Put all 5L in, start it up and run it for 15 mins or so, and let the excess drain out. You can stick a temp probe in the inspection hole if you wish. The target temp is 35deg C.

I've got the filler and the service kit. I'm just scared if the previous DSG service didn't have the right amount of oil put in, and if I correctly know the oil temperature, even with just a probe.

Disregard what comes out. It's not important, same goes for the temperature.

Put all 5 litres in, and let the excess out while it's running. Make sure the car's level though.

You'll probably get 500-800mL back out in excess.

What if the oil heats too much and excess oil spills out?
I'm not against what your're suggesting, it would probably save me quite a bit of money I'd just like to do the job as accurately as possible

I think that you should put some trust in the VAG mechanic. Umai Naa! has many years experience and have done many DSG services.

Just do the job on 30 deg plus day that way you will have the right temperature and no need to measure the fluid, just don't let the engine idle unnecessary and make sure you shift through all gears, staying in each for 10s.

..and make sure you dispose of the waste oil properly.
