towbar install, computer module nessessary or splice into taillight?

hey guys I've been trying to install a towbar, one shop quote $750 with ECU module while another is $490 without...
of cause some claims for MKV u can simply splice the wiring into the taillight. the $750 guy says for that model requires a computer module/relay kind of thing so the car 'KNOWS' a trailer is attached... is the extra $260 necessary?

You can't simply splice into the taillight wiring.

There are wiring kits out there specific to this model, that will work without melting the central electrics module. I would recommend a genuine VW kit, but apparently Hayman Reese has a halfhearted workaround.

As Umai said VW genuine is best. When the trailer is plugged in a lot of systems function differently with a trailer module fitted, think ABS, parking aid etc.

For the extra money I'd be going for the correct fit, cutting/splicing/soldering never ends well on VWs.
