Looking at my options to repair or improve my starter - I've been told by my mechanic that it's "tired" and I didn't really want to hand over another $560 last time I had it serviced. What are my options?
1. Clean / recon current starter components per this video on YT (Starter motor repair VW Audi Skoda Seat 1.9tdi - BOSCH 0001125012 - YouTube).
- Will this help a 'tired' starter?
- I've read the brushes can wear out but I'm not sure what type of starter symptom this relates to.
2. Replacement.
- Bosch seems to be the recommended replacement.
- What is the difference between the 1.7kw and 2kw starter? I'm assuming the 2kw is an upgraded part? Does more power = better? The 2kw ones I've found run at around $500.
Apart from this I can't tell any other differences between these 3 starters on SparesBox.
- 0 001 123 012 - $588 - No specs provided.
- 0 001 123 014 - 1.7kw - $270
- 0 001 123 036 - 2kw - $443
Thanks all

Update: So I did a complete teardown, clean, regrease and reassemble. Really happy with the improvement in starting.
I used the following video to test starter operation, solenoid, internal contacts : How to test your starter motor & solenoid - Starter troubleshooting - YouTube.
The brushes are quite worn after 13 years, so I will order some and have them ready to go when needed.
Note for my 1.9 DSG starter - all of the nuts are is accessible from the top of the engine bay once you remove the airbox. No requirement to go under the car. Something I wasn't 100% clear on before starting the job.
