    Replacement Steering Rack for GTI

    Hi Team,

My 2006 GTI is making a horrible grinding noise during low speed cornering. I know this means I need to replace the steering rack. The guys at VW Village tell me that the cost of a genuine VW rack recently increased from around $1k to $2k.

Has anyone installed or know of any decent non-genuine parts suppliers? I would be looking for a better price than $2k but i don't want to risk getting a dud rack.

    Cheers,
    Sean

Yes, noise occurs when the car is stationary while turning the steering wheel. If it were a cv joint then the noise would occur only when the car is moving. Mechanic has advised it is the steering rack.

It started off as a clicking noise and progressively got worse over a year. I've heard of a lot of people having this problem, however theirs seemed to occur earlier than mine and was fixed under warranty. My car is at 113k, most people seemed to have it occur around 30k.
