I would have suggested step 4, but if that does not work perhaps the issue is with the car itself.
Do you have a 2nd key ? Proving both fail or not would help a lot.
A VCDS scan would likely show a code.
Hi,
One day the remote stopped working so I have done the following
1) put new battery in both remotes and checked the battery in the garage door remote and the batteries are good
2) light flashes once when I press any button and flashes repeatedly when i hold it down
3) all fuses are ok
4) tried to synch the remote again by pressing open button then using key to open the door and putting key in ignition and turning
But the remote still doesn't work, is there anything else I can try?
Thanks

yeah exactly the same with both remotes with known good batteries
One more thing to try, when you unlock with remote, do any of the doors unlock ?
The door locks are prone to fail, they all do it at some point, they go one at a time so just one door will have issues.
Next step is to find someone with a scan tool.

nothing happens at all when I press the button, it was working fine one day then next day nothing at all.
Intermittently it sometimes didnt work but I thought that was the battery getting low, but had not had a problem for several months
Where are you located mate ?
You need to find someone to scan the car, an enthusiast with a cable or a proper VW mechanic is what you need.
