    Reliable VW parts supplier

Can anyone recommend somewhere I can buy parts for my Golf MkV, either here in Australia or Europe/USA etc that has reasonable prices and ships reliably (especially now with COVID restrictions).
I'm after a rear driver-side door mechanism and wouldn't know where to start or what is a reasonable price.

    Cheers

RunAutoParts is a great local parts supplier for new parts but doubt they will have a rear door mechanism.

There is a place called ASV that specialise in wrecking European cars. They are located in Cardiff and will be your best bet i'd say.

Also don't forget that the part number you are looking for is likely also used on the Audi A3 of the same era so worth looking at that if you cant find a Mk5.

VOLKSWAGEN – ASV Euro Car Parts – European Auto Spares

If you want a brand new item then have a look at ECS Tuning in USA. Shipping is expensive though so best to grab a few things at the same time to make it worthwhile.

Looks like the part # 3B4839016AP

I have purchased my replacement door locks from ebay from D2 Auto Parts (UK based). They did not have a front passenger (or left side rear passenger) and I had to get those from a China based ebay seller (one worked great, the other door sensor open/closed doesn't work but still locks/unlocks everytime). If you are in Melbourne, I have some spares I bought from a wrecker at the cost I paid. I bought it in the event the ones from ebay started failing but so far two years in they've been good.

I would try a wreckers if you needed it immediately.

The ones from D2 Auto Parts - I paid around $45-50. The ones off the China based eBay seller were around $30-38. The ones from the wreckers were around $50 from memory. Dealers charge you around $200-$300 as I remember.

If that part number is correct (3B4839016AP) then would this one be incorrect?

Im getting results for both part numbers saying they fit a Mk5 Golf.....so who knows. VW do have a habit of changing part numbers, although usually they use the same part number but just the last 1-2 digits changes, denoting a revision in the part.

You might need to remove your door trim, check your current part # and then order based off that.

This is the one I purchased from ebay. I paid $35 in early 2019. It's a bit more now but this one worked no issues.

As it turns out I paid about $200 for two locks (my mistake)

Thanks guys, so from what I'm reading there's no one-stop shop for all things VW Golf Mk5. I need to shop around and check part numbers. In this case ebay seems to be my best bet.

    +1 for D2 Auto Parts.

Installed a Right Drivers in 2016 and haven't had any issues since, however I'm told during services that it throws an error, but operationally it works fine.

In terms of finding parts, it's always a mix of wreckers, ebay, marketplace. I've never been able to justify the shipping costs from ECS tuning.

I ended up buying one from ebay, and went to install it on the weekend. After watching a video on youtube on how to do it, I got stuck when trying to undo the bolt inside the hole to remove the locking barrel. The video wasn't clear on this. First of all, what size torx is it? None of mine fit (either too big or too small). It also looks like it would be too big to pull it out through the hole without dropping it. Do you just loosen it?
Can you remove the barrel without undoing that bolt? I tried but it didn't seem to want to move. What's the trick?

You might need one of these magnetic pick up tools. These are worth their weight in gold even if they might not be what you need for this particular job. Super super handy tool to have when working on cars.
