    Rear left door will not unlock

    Tries to unlock the rear left door on my R32 no go, all the other doors including the hatch operate ok would appreciate some help to rectify this problem

    It'll need a new latch module, most likely.


    Very common problem on the MK5.

    There is various YouTube clips of how to disassemble and repair the lock mechanism. It either comes down to the micro switches been faulty or the contacts in the motor dirty or cracked solder joints on the circuit board.

    I’ve just repaired my daughters that had dirty motor contacts. The motor is a cow to pull apart though.

    If your not up for repairing yours I’ve seen Chinese clones for about $50 on eBay. I don’t know how good they are.

    I have just had a second door lock start to go bad on my Jetta. 1st one I just changed with a unit from the wreckers, this one I'd like to try and repair, have you got any tips on how to diagnose the switches and motors? I guess you could check continuity across the switches and the resistance across the motors?

    I pulled them apart and checked the resistance of the micro switches with an ohm meter - no issues.

    The motors i hooked up to a 6v power supply and found the main lock motor I could stop with my fingers very easily and if i let it rotate slowly between my fingers it would get to a spot where it would stop and not continue untill i gave it a little nudge.

    I pulled the motor apart - there is two indentations in the metal housing you need to lever out - a real PITA to do. but once you get them out the guts just slid out - I used a bit of 1200 wet and dry and and cleaned up the brass contacts - they were very dirty (black) reasembleing was a bit tricky to get the brushes back on to the contacts but not impossible. hooking back up to the powersupply. After the clean up I couldnt stop the motor with out significant discomfort to my fingers - it was a significant change to before the clean up.

    ive had 2 mk5s with this exact problem. eventually the door will unlock, until then there is no getting it open! you have to be ready for when it does unlock....... the cheap chinese $35 locks of ebay last about 12 months before they start ****ting themselves. they work fine until they stop. then your back to square one!

    I should add when my daughters started playing up I knew i would be a while before I could get to looking at it so I disabled the dead lock function(Safe Lock??) VCDS so at least it could be opened from the inside.

    Gave this a trial run today on one of my old door locks. Cleaning it up lowered the resistance significantly, however I couldn't get the motor open without completely destroying the tabs that hold the plastic part in. Have you got any advice on how to bend the tabs out and what tools did you use? Cheers

    Its an absolute cow - I nearly gave up.

    I used a small flat head screw driver and just kept trying to lever them out it wasnt a pretty job. there isnt much to grab on or lever against. I wasnt worried about damaging the motor - if I couldnt get it apart I was going to have to replace it anyway. My plan was to get one of the chinese modules and take the motor out of it (I dont know if that was possible but I was going to try)

    I just had a look through for a photo of the end result but didnt take one sorry.

    Unless you are certain that the motor is playing up I wouldn't do it just to try it.
