RCD500 Radio Code - Are VW just messing me around

I have removed the RCD500 from my MK5 GTI and looking for the radio code as I wish to sell the unit.

I went to VW, who took my car off my for 2 hours and then told me that 'their Germany system is down' and they had nothing on file for a radio code. They told me to contact Barloworld, where it was first sold.

I contacted Barloworld, who said that they can't get it and I need to contact a company called 'go technologies'.
I contacted them who said they charge $25 to give me the code, but don't guarantee that it is the code. (WTF?!)

I have searched every page of the books/manuals that came with the car and can't find it written down.
Has anyone got another way? Cheers.

The first response is quite plausible. That's how they get the codes, from a centralised system in Germany.

Never heard of the 'go technologies' but I would avoid it. Just ask the dealer to do it again. I got it done at Alto VW in Blacktown for $50, probably all labour, but it's piss easy for them to do, but it needs to be in the car.

That said, an RCD500 is worth about $50 now second hand, so maybe just use it as a door stop

Well, I just called Barloworld again - after complaining to someone else about the situation, they asked me for the serial number off the RCD500 and once I provided it to them, they SMS'd me the PIN code within 5 minutes.

Yep - Sold the unit for $80 on eBay. I know it's not much, but I just can't stand holding on to stuff I'm never going to use again.

Yours would be an RCD510, and being a newer version, would be worth a few hundred bucks on the used market.

Go Technologies are who you ring if you have an older VW with a Eurovox radio in it.

For the newer stuff, the VW dealer needs to submit a query to the database in Germany via secure login, using your VIN (well any VAG VIN really), and the serial number off the radio unit requiring the code. Some dealers will put the radio code on file, or at least it'll be on the Pre-Delivery job card, as the cars come off the boat with radio locked.
