    R32 SC or Turbo?

    Hey guys,

I currently own a MKV GTI and toyed with the idea of a 4 motion conversion, but it would be a much better move to get rid of it and get an R32, however I don't want an average atmo R32 I want to force feed this baby.

Has anyone here done such a conversion on the 3.2 VR6?

I have seen a few overseas companies that do kits etc but they all appear to cost too much money, I'm pretty sure I could go to a performance shop somewhere in AUS and get a custom turbo or SC kit made and it cost much less, the problem is I am not sure which shops would have sufficient knowledge about these specific cars and engines to carry out the work needed.

I am looking for around 300-400 awkw and am aware that this would require a lower compression ratio and forged internals.

Would it be more cost efficient to 4 motion the GTI or to perhaps put a 2.0T in the R32 and go to town on that? I am open to suggestions and welcome any and all info regarding this adventure.

    Cheers guys

Considering you are put off by the cost of Turbo kits for an R32 I would stay away from a 4motion conversion on a GTi or putting a 2.0T into an R32. My suggestions - Buy an Mk6 R - its a turbo 4 with 4 motion . Yes its expensive but any of the options you listed there would be very expensive so better off saving that towards an R and then modding that - 300-400awkw is possible but not if you are going in with the idea of keeping things affordable.

Yeah, I agree with poyta. Unless you have a specific engineering reason to do it, a Mk6 R makes much more sense. I was looking at them the other night as a replacement for my GT and reasonable km MY12 ones on Carsales are sitting at around $35k. Low km, newer ones sitting around $40k.

You're talking hefty modification and customisation. Check out some of the older issues of Motor magazine hot-tuner specials whereby a Sydney shop turbo'd (perhaps twin turbo from recollection) an R36 engine and shoehorned it into a golf. I can't recall the shops name, I'm sure others may know them and can elaborate. I think the Motor magazine came out last year, but could be older.

A more reliable and straight forward alternative would be the Golf R and go from there.

AP at City Performance did the 3.6 with supercharger. He also let the old 3.2 fall into his wagon with a diff from an R32 as well if memory serves me right. The DSG had massive work to keep it from falling apart. Count on $30,000 or more if you want to play in this park If you are getting the work all done by a shop, add lots more. Getting a MK6R and getting a tune and some other smaller tweaks would be a much more pocket friendly proposition.

Last I heard that project was around $100,000. Doubt you'd get very far with only 30k.

I know the MK6 R is a sensible route but everyone has one now, I would like to be a little different and have something unique, sadly I realise this is gonna cost a load of cash, maybe I will just do some work on my octy RS as they are pretty rare.

    Thanks for the input guys
