Agree with you to certain point the manufacturer does not help in certain circumstances you are forced into buying a new unit with no other options. 2nd hand units should be a choice for the consumer and if any change needs to be made to readings they should be charged at a decent price and done totally legal. I think you would see more owners not resorting to other methods. Let's be honest car makers jack the price of parts in some instances costing 10 times more than what they were produced for. Of course it's business but $1000 for a dash insert plus let's say at least an hour for labour at roughly $180 who would go genuine? I wouldn't for a ten year old car.
