The paint is from me when I removed the old belt but I believe the belt was stretched or something so when I re aligned it and put it all back together I'm getting the retarded code.
Ma I don't think that's the mark, more of a dent from something

I haven't actually done a non turbo FSI motor but if I am wrong I'll admit it, when someone posts the picture of the pulley reinstalled on the crank.

Pictures are of Turbo motors but in 20 some years of running VWs and Audis. I am yet to see them reinvent this wheel.

Perfect thanks so much h100vw so that 'dent' in the metal actually is the tdc mark? That's horrible but makes me happy haha

Yup that is the mark as said, there are no locking tools for the 2.0fsi, just make sure to make your own marks to follow afterwards so you don't have to go refitting the crank pulley/covers to check the timing.

The lesson to be learned here is line everything up before you remove the crank pulley and lower cover.

You can just put the pulley back on, it only goes one way as you can see on the front of the sprocket so no real issue. Just for timing belt's sake you can use the cam mark to line it up roughly and aslong as you make your own marks to use then you won't have an issue. unless the timing is already out ofcourse.
