    MK5 GTI Start Problem

    Hi guys,

    I've got a 2008 2 Door GTI and been having some intermittent problems upon starting the car,

    Sometimes it will kick over easy but sometimes it sounds very rough to the point where the lights dim and everything turns off and then the car will finally kick over..

    A couple of nights ago I went to get some groceries came back to the car and tried to kick it over, made a really slow churning noise but didn't want to start.

    Checked the battery with a multimeter and it was at 12.4v which "Should" be okay right?

    Went to get jumper leads from a friends house which took about half an hour and by the time I got back to the car, I turned it over first time no problems what so ever!

    Scratching my head here and hoping it is just a crappy battery, can anyone shed some light on this for me please?

    Cheers

    Off load voltage doesn't mean anything really. It sounds like the battery is bad, or you have a bad connection somewhere, battery clamps or ground straps.

    A high resistance in the circuit would still give you 12 volts or more at the terminals but whe the resistance is introduced the voltage available at the starter drop significantly.

    V=IR dictates this.
