Mk5 cooling fan wiring explanation/diagram

Hi all,

i have currently taken some mk5 fans sitting out of the car and want to test the fan control function. I was wondering if anyone has a diagram. i gather that the red thick wire goes to a 12v feed and the other two thin wires trigger high speed/ low speed. however
connecting the red wire to postive and brown to ground yield nothing and connecting the thin wires to the battery. however if i put the brown wire to postive and red to ground the fans spin backwards at full speed. would this indicate a failed control module or am i not doing something correctly. any help is appreciated

What year is your vehicle? Wiring diagrams are available online for 2003 models and later.
