OK, i'm all over this like a rash. Got the hots for a MY07 GTI DSG in white or red, standard no sat/nav, laether, sunroof etc. But need to get more info on cost of repairs and maint. I'm a Subaru man MY00 Liberty RX, but it's time to move on. The GTI is top of my list on a tight budget, so gotta make the right choice. Thoughts??

ps- does it really get 8L per 100k combined?

id budget 10L per 100kms unless you wanna drive in a fashion that would take all the joy out of ownership!

If you're after 8L/100, the GT petrol would be your best bet. 8 is what I get 'round town (traffic lights are your enemy!). The guys with GTIs that I know get 9-10 in the same sort of traffic.

Mind you, if I 'sink the slipper' the TSI is a thirsty little beast!

The GTI will always be a slightly faster ride than the GT, but the GT will always be more economical too.

It can be economical, but it depends on what sort of traffic you have during your commutes.
I regularly get 7-8's during rush hour (Canberra) but can be around 9-10 very easily

until 9 months ago, I would not have streesed 2much about this, but with Petrol soo high and GTI requiring 98oct it's something to consider, hey can you use The E10 say from United 10% Ethanol Boost98 fuel. It's usually 2-4 cents cheaper than standard unleaded!

What do I like about my 08 TDI GT SPORT

Economy Economy Economy after owning an XR6 this thing is amazing.

6 Speed manual transmission - I'm sooo happy to be back in a manual.

Sunroof - come on sunshine, I'm sick of the rain !!! - it's still great for demisting windows though from all the heavy breathing due to the pure growling performance

Torque Torque Torque - I love hills and corners and so does this beasty

All in all - I love my new Golf

Just filled up for the second time (1300 k's on the clock) economy getting better all the time - this tank averaged 6.4 L / 100 k's city / hwy combined

My TSI quite happily takes 95, so if a few cents a litre makes a difference to you, that can be an option...

While they recommend 98, 95 is also quite OK to use, and apparently even 91 for emergencies can be used (although 91 isn't advisable for long periods). I'm unsure on the advised octane ratings for GTIs (that wasn't specified in my owner's manual).
