    Major Service pricing

Hey guys, just thought I'd ask if this is reasonable or am I being taken for a ride?
So I'm due for my 120,000km service on my MKV GTI. Here is what my German mechanic said is needed:
VW Major Service (DSG, pollon filter and all the rest of it) $850
Also, according to my service book I'm due for the following:
Timing belt and all pullies - $700
    Waterpump - $300
    + Labor etc

They are NOT replacing spark plugs or cam follower (replaced already within 500km ago)

    so total cost quoted $1990.

    Thoughts?

Oil Service & associated visual checks is around $330 inc labour
    Pollen filter is $25
    Air Filter $25
    Fuel Filter $50
DSG will be $350ish inc labour
Not sure what else he's doing for the $850

You can buy a Continental timing belt kit with tensioners, pullies & a water pump for $300 deliered off eBay. Water pump by itself is $110. If you supply your own parts then you are providing your own warranty that the parts are fit for purpose & of good quality, so if something goes wrong he'll charge you a 2nd time to do the job.

Your mech would be buying locally & has to put his margin on it but I'd be asking if he's buying / paying VW prices or buying from Imparts or similar.

His price is kind-of ballpark but at the upper range for an independant IMO. If he's a good mech & occasionally does free stuff for you then maybe it's worth the $$.

Normally, you do the timing belt and water pump at 105,000kms as per the schedule, thus spreading the costs and labour out.

Not sure it'd be the figures you qouted + labour.

Genuine timing belt kit, coolant and genuine exchange water pump are about $400 all up, retail if that gives you any indication.
