Looking for a new daily drive - '06 TDI or TFSI?

Price difference seems to be about $1-2k. Not looking to modify it at all, just want a comfortable daily drive which can eat up the km's with ease.

What about reliability? Has much gone wrong so far with the Mk5 Jettas??

The petrol has a habit of eating the cam follower on the high pressure fuel pump. Carbon buildup can be an issue for direct injection too.
The 2 cars are a bit different in performance.
You should drive them both to see which you like.

Both will be dsg so check the service history for fluid changes and ensure a test drive shows no sign of clunks or hesitation on gear changes.

Other issues would be bad door locks, sagging headliner, interior lights not activating on door open.

You can get these in a manual as well which would be a better bet than an ageing DSG.
TFSI will be a fair bit quicker as it's the 2.0 147kw engine.
With most of the better examples around 8-9k can you stretch to a good example of an '06 Golf GTI? More fun to drive and also far more practical hatch...

But the boot is too small if you have kids.

I have a 2008 2.0 Tsi and I love it. If you want a bit of punch then I recommend that. But if you literally do not care about performance then the Diesel would be a better option, it will last longer and is more economical(even though my tsi is pretty good too)
